I don't know what the story was with the lady who hit us. The state police told me later that there weren't even skid marks - I think she was either on a cell phone or distracted with something in her car, but it must have been a while because we had been stopped in traffic for at least 30 secs and were on a straightaway and not on a hill. The xTerra was totalled (you can see the top of it in one of the pics - yellow). Whatever, the lady is totally liable. After she hit us we hit the car in front of us and were then pushed out into the middle of the highway and were broadsided full speed by oncoming traffic. 4 cars in all.

My daughter had her feet up on the backseat which in hindsight was a very good thing because when I came to my seat was flat back onto the backseat - her legs would have been broken. The passenger compartement held up amazingly well. The car hit us slightly offcenter to the right and our backseat on the right was pushed in about 9". All the airbags deployed - I will never buy a car again that doesn't have side curtain airbags as I'm convinced they played a big part in saving us.

Thanks for everyone's thoughts!

Are you saying the impact of the Xtera colapsed your seat down onto the backseat?

Methinks that isn't a good thing? (As far as G35 construction is concerned)

Although I guess when you get hit at 60mph, the moments being placed on the seat (by your body) are immense.

That is unbelievable. I don't understand how someone could be so wreckless. I hope you are being covered by her insurance for potential health related problems that could arise in the future.

WOW MAN!

Two things...

1) You DID beat the crap out of the ******* who broke your daughters jaw didn't you?
2) (this question is for anyone) What happens if you car gets totalled on a Hit-and-Run where the guy who hit you is not found... YOUR ensurance pays for your car right? But does premium go up?

One thing I'm learning about accidents like this - it takes a long time to sort out all the details. At the wreck site I didn't see much of any of the other drivers -when they finally got us out of the car they put us right into an ambulance. Their insurance company has already accepted full liability but told me that they have only the minimum insurance coverage required in my state. My lawyer is handling everything right now. One thing everyone out there should be sure of is that you get the underinsured motorist coverage on your own policy which covers you for accidents that weren't your fault if they don't have proper coverage.

There was someone else on here who had a similar accident - someone plowing into them while they were stopped, at 60 or so mph... Your accident looks like it happened at 60/65.. The other nowhere near that speed.

My money says that the other driver was on a cell phone.
Best wishes to a speedy recovery to you and your daughter.
The collapsing of the rear seat is not rare. I have seen same situation happened to a Toyota Cramry. It seems that the seats that are recline-able by lever, rather than by dial (VW's) etc, are more susceptible to failure.
The pictures certainly show cause to buy another G35.

Wow, your crash is very close to what my wife experienced in her 97 Altima a few years back. While stopped on the highway for construction, a guy (drunk) in a VW Rabbit hit her at ~55-60mph with no brakes. The point of impact was slightly offset to the driver's side. There was no trunk left and the rear seat was pushed forward about 3", but the cabin was still very much in tack. Her car was flung to the right and hit some other parked car. She walked away with some mild whiplash. I was very impressed by the strength of the cabin and how the crush points did their job. I'm gald to her you guys were able to walk away with no life threatening injuries. I think that speaks worlds about the engineering of the today's cars.

As for getting uninsured motorist protection, I couldn't agree more. The drunk that hit my wife had no insurance. State Farm cut us a check for the Altima about 10 days after the wreck and they took the drunk to court. All we had to pay was our $250 deductible and we got an $8,000 check for a $6,000 car. After 3 years of court, State Farm didn't get a dime out of the driver therefore we didn't get our deductible back. Oh well, it was a small price to pay because there would have been no way we would have gotten any money out of the guy either. For those you that don't have uninsured motorist protection, you're crazy. The chances of you getting any money from the other party is about nill. The courts protect these people which is a crock. Even if you win the settlement, chances are you will get your money back in $30/mo increments for 30 years. If the person claims bankruptcy, you get nothing. Let your insurance company take the loss.

As for the G35's crash worthiness, according to the IIHS the G35 sedan has quite a good rating and ranks one of the highest in it's class. The Rear hit/head restraint test ranks the car as poor/marginal, but if you look at other cars tested, 90% rank as poor/marginal. Even BMWs and Mercedes. Volvo is the only company that gets a "good" rating.

The new side impact test hasn't been performed on any Infiniti yet.
