Driving hard vs Babying your G

So I remember reading an article in a magazine that said driving your car hard had little or no affect on engine life. They compared reving an engine to opening a door....it really doesn't matter if you open a door a little or all the way since the door stop will keep you from causing damage to the door. They said an engine is built the same way and the cutoff will keep you from hurting anything. It said you could take your engine into the high RPMs for every shift and it would last well over 100K miles. Any opinions here on this theory?

Sounds like a goofy opinion to support

your habit of driving hard

Enjoy your ride bro, but take care of it and it will take care of you.

All of my vehicles have gone near 200k miles before I sell them.

Actually I baby my G for the most part, but do open it up from time to time. I believe I read the article in Miata magazine.

I doubt it'll will shorten engine life to open it up occasionally like you do.
To do it most/all of the time isn't a good idea tho.

An occasional run up the scale is good for the soul.

I don't beat on her though.

I am not an expert, but I feel like a car is just like anything mechanical. If you abuse something over and over and over and over, its going to break down. Take your car door for example...I think it would break if you continually slammed it open and closed aggressively. As for the engine, if you keep redlining it over and over, you would definitely have some early wear issues. But opening up once in a while, here and there, no biggie. But continually driving hard on it, is abuse.

Thats just my thoughts, could be wrong.

Stretch your legs, get a little exercise, let 'er roll! It's all good in moderation.
Cars, like horses, like to be driven hard sometimes . They were built for it, they run better that way. But everything in moderation.

Or lease it like me!

I agree that letting the car "run" occasionally is good for it, and fun too. But to drive it to the limit all the time will probably cause undue wear and tear as with any other kind of mechanical equipment. I guess I baby my car most of the time...but sometimes I just have to open 'er up and roll!! It always gives me a big old smile.

I cannot drive the G35 as hard as I could on my '98 M3 sedan though. That car could be pushed so close to the edge that you just knew you were going to lose it bigtime...but it always held in there. Too bad it cost so much $$$ to maintain and keep "tuned".

No whining here though. I love my new "G"!!

I somewhat "babied" during the initial break-in... after 4K I started getting more "spirited". Now at 10K with mods I drive the **** out of her when conditions permit!!! 1/2 the time there is too much traffic, but the other 1/2 is nothing but performance bliss!

When I pull the car in the garage she whispers softly "was is as good for you?"... My car loves our spirited drives! And so do I

I drive my car hard but not over redline. Well yesterday I didn't even notice when it happened but I was enjoying an on-ramp acceleration that when I finally looked up I was at 7400 RPM's. I wasn't happy about that, but on the other habd nothing strange happened. I thought it was supposed to cut engine power when you get into redline. I guess not.
