possible BOSE fix
possible BOSE fix
Hi all. I have the BOSE system in my G and I also use to work for BOSE and own several of there newer systems. Periodically they send out upgrade discs for these systems. So I contacted the automotive customer service department at Bose via their website, to see if they plan to upgrade our G's system. They responded by saying that I was the first complaint, but they wouild look into it. I know from my time working at BOSE that they are very customer oriented. So I would suggest that those of you that are unhappy with the sound of the G's BOSE system, let BOSE know. Go to www.bose.com and click on automotive products and navigate to customer service.

Hi, I recently purchased an Infiniti G35 coupe with the optional Bose stereo system. Although the sound is nice, it is severely behind the Acura/Honda stereos as far as quality goes. I thought that with the 220 watt, Bose, that I would have better highs and midrange as well as decent bass, but I find all areas to be completely lacking.
I usually don't complain, but this seems to be the only weak aspect of my car and I'm severely disappointed. Additionally, it seems that the 6 disk changer is VERY slow to switch CD's. My 8 year old Pioneer 6 disk changer was infinitely faster than this unit.
I'm hoping that you can provide me with advice on updating or buying a new system/speakers/amplifier that will supplement or replace what I currently have. I would like to retain the steering wheel controls, so please advise.
Sincerely,
Greg

Can someone please post this in the coupe section with a tack? Its worthwhile for all of us to barrage them with comments.

Re: possible BOSE fix
I too wrote them back in May about my system in the G. While not as bad as the Z, I think it is pretty lame. Here is what I wrote:

Patty,
My name is Bill R. I am the owner of Audio Connection in Va. Beach, Va. which we recently signed up as a Bose retailer.
However, my reason for writing is that I am the owner of a Infiniti G35 Coupe. I am satisfied with the car in all aspects except the Bose stereo system.
I have had other vehicles with Bose audio in them (and I sell your
products), so I know what kind of sound quality I should expect from your company.
However the sound quality from my Infiniti G35 is simply horrible and certainly not up to the Bose standard, espically for a "premium system". Not only does the system not sound good, but the "automatic level control" that adjusts volume and tonal qualities as ambient sound levels rise, totally ruins the sound even more. Who ever designed the eq circuit for that got it
totally incorrect!
I am aware that you may have just designed a system to Infiniti/Nissan per their specifications, but on each speaker and the radio the "Bose" corporate name is displayed prominently. This is something that Bose should NOT be proud of.
The Bose name on the Infiniti G35 AND the Nissan 350Z is a disgrace to your company and a poor marketing situation.
I, and many other G35 and 350Z owners hold your company responsible since Bose designed the acoustic signature of the system.

This is just one of many websites I have seen discuss this problem. These websites are visted by MANY people, and the negative responses in reguards to the Bose name will certainly give your company a poor reputation.
You should contact Infiniti/Nissan and work with them to revise the EQ program in the Bose amp so the sound quality is
acceptable.
Thank you for your time,
Now here is the Bose response:
Hello Bill,
Thank you for contacting the Automotive Systems Division, I am sorry to hear that you are disappointed with the Bose Music System in your Infiniti G35. I have not received any other complaints regarding the Bose Music System in the G35. We are aware of our customers dissatisfaction with the Bose Music System in the 350Z and we are addressing this with Nissan
Corporation.
Have you asked the Infiniti dealer to determine if your system is performing to specification ? or listened to another G35 for comparison. If you have had the Infiniti dealer diagnose the system can you give me some specific details on your system that I can forward to our OEM Service Engineer for recommendations ?
Thank you for choosing Bose Corporation.

LOL, good one. Actually I think the horrible sound quality is exactly what I would expect from the "Bose standard": overpriced, cheaply made junk. Bose may have made a name for themselves as the "premium" audio company among consumers who don't know any better, but anybody who knows anything about audio knows that Bose=crap. Their home theater systems are complete ripoffs, you can buy systems for less than half the price that will completely stomp the Lifestyle systems. And now that I've heard one of their car audio systems, I see that same standard has carried over to their car audio systems.
It sounds to me like the "upgrade" the original poster is talking to is a firmware update. But all the firmware updates in the world aren't going to change the fact that the system has an anemic amp and cheap paper cone speakers. If you really want to improve the sound, you're going to have to replace the speakers at the very least, and depending on how efficient the new speakers are and how loud you like your music, you may need a new amp, too. Unfortunately we're pretty much stuck with the head unit, so I don't think there's anything we can do about the slow CD changer, but at least you can improve the audio quality.

Re: possible BOSE fix
I forgot to add, if you really want to send your complaints to where they could do some good, complain to Infiniti. It's a crying shame that the only audio upgrade offered is the Bose system, we should have more/better choices available to us. It's also a shame that pretty much the only way to avoid wasting the money on the bose upgrade is to get a stripped down G35 with no options, since pretty much all the cars with any options at all have the bose upgrade.

Re: possible BOSE fix
Granted that all Bose products are *cough* crap *cough*, they do have the name and marketability to the "general" public.
Everyone must understand, the Bose way of designing audio is not to build great speakers or electronics. Just advertise that they do!!!!
They build "average" equipment, and design in elborate equalization circuits to try to make it sound better. The Clarion radio in the cars is ok, the speakers are ok (for stock) it is just that the EQ circuit in the Bose amp is half assed.
The amp is a very small (weak) amp that is very stable to low impedence. Bose requires speakers that are 1 ohm. By using that type of speaker, they get more power out of an amp that might only be 10 to 15 watts into normal (4 or 8 ohm) speakers.
What we need, is for Bose to redesign the EQ circuit to something more acceptable. I think that is all that we can expect as well.
