Rev Limiter
Rev Limiter
I have an 05 6MT just arrived last week (finally), and I wanted to know if there is a rev limiter. I always assumed that there was, because of previous posts on the subject but i can rev to 8k in 1-3 (havent tried in 4th and up because thats a little faster than I want to go on a public street) So if there is a limiter what is it set to? That didnt seem to get settled in the 2005 rev limiter thread. Also how unhealthy is it for the engine to rev that extra 1k into red line?

There is a rev limiter on the AWD model and hit I it once by accident. I forget what it was set for, but it was below 7000 I can tell you that. I find it weird that you can rev to 8000. I seem to recall that about 6500 was the limit. They might have raised it a bit on the MT 05s.. I think to like 6800.
I do not know any production car other than a honda s2000 or rx8 that can rev to 8000 without the potential of some harm to the engine.
As for going an extra 1000 in to the red... well the valves are what you need to worry about. I know the vq's internals are tested to withstand about 450 hp at the crank, but the valves opening and closing faster than the normal operating range can cause valve flutter which can cause some serious issues.

My 05 6MT redlines at 7k, but I have exceeded that a number of times. Most of the time it's only been a hundred or so, just because I was too slow to shift. One time, however, I got it all the way to 7500. That particular time, I had a punk about to drive up my @$$ on a blind corner, and it got to the red way before I expected it to. So that was accidental.
Anyway, my car doesn't seem to have a rev limiter, at least not that has any functional similarity to our 04 5AT. In that car, it will literally "bounce" it you hit the limiter. In my car, there's no such effect.

Oh, by the way . . . Congrats on your new car!

You can use whatever size font and bold it all you like, but my "unexpected" run to 7500 was unimpeded. No fuel cutoff. That doesn't mean I'm disagreeing with you, but it just didn't happen for me.

If you downshift from 4th to 2nd you might be able to hit it before the engine blows. Buddy there is a fuel cut way before 7500rpm and anyone with an 06 6spd who runs their car hard can tell you that. Get some glasses or don't do high rpm down shifts.
lol
Ha ha guys no need to flame, #1 i already have broken in the car 1134 miles at time of posting (I LOVE driving, i think its time to chill out on the high miles though
). never went above 4.5k rpms and alternated speeds on the freeway etc. #2 I also know where to downshift so please dont assume im an idiot dropping into 2nd at high speeds. I have only HELD the gears up to 8k only 3 times, (1st 2nd 3rd) just to see if i could.
As for everyone that had HELPFUL comments I thanks for the input.. I did special order the car thats the only reason that I could think why the rev limiter could be diffrent, or non existant.. also a minor thing. the Rev light came preset at 8k.... that could just be so that it doesnt start flashing and scare old unknowing people on test drives, but it seems odd.....
Lastly IMO it probably isnt GOOD for the motor, but i doubt its THAT bad either, most people (I assume) thought it unhealthy to go 500 into redline on 03 (04?) G's...then the factory gave us an extra 500 rpms so i can't see it being catastrophic.... Wow damn that was long. ok im done rambling..

WOW...I am very surprised at how unhelpfull MOST of you have been. Is this how everyone is treated on this site? Im sorry is this g35driver.com or did I mistakenly enter clubsi.com? I myself come from Bimmerforums.com and this type of behavior would equal time-outs for those choose to waste their time on not helping someone who requests it. If you have nothing usefull to say then..thats right, dont say anything.

How is this for useful: The fuel cut on a 2005 6spd is 7200rpm!
