Interested in G35x - ?s

Hi - I'm new to the forum and also new to the world of Infiniti. I am really considering the 2006 G35x. I understand the 06 is getting intelligent key and bluetooth which are two features I have been waiting for in this car!

I have a couple of ?s - first, what are the big issues/problems/gripes with this car? What should I look out for or be ready to deal with?

Second, is there a group consensus on sport suspension upgrades for the x? Coming from the VW/Audi world everyone agrees on H&R (with Eibach a close 2nd.) Is a sport suspension even necessary? Anyone have one?

Thanks so much!

Please use the 'Search' functionality which is under the "Forums" drop-down menu. You will find all your answers.

I have an 05 G35x got it couple of months ago and just love it.
There is not any big improvements for the 06 other than the Bluetooth. Intelligent Key is already available in 05.

If you are looking for a good deal, you will be better off getting the 05. If you have more money to spend.... More power to you

Good luck in your search.

I love it when my first post is responded to by a "please search". How about an answer?

I have searched and I have found plenty of great threads. Most of them are specific - I am looking for more of a general sense from the community. Each post has merit by itself, but it is hard to get a sense of "what everyone thinks" from searching individual posts.

So, let me be more specific -
  1. I have read about premature brake wear - is this a somewhat isolated problem or a big deal with the model?
  2. I have seen lots about squeaks and rattles - not too concerned here cause I love a challenge!
  3. I understand that there is a factory sport suspension but it is hard to tell if it is something for the G35x model. Search for sport suspension yourself and you get a TON of coupe and 6MT info.
  4. I did not know about the key in the 05? I thought it was an addition to the 06 as listed in this thread?

Thanks and if anyone else can help out that would be great!

The Coupe does not get the key until the 06 model, the G35x Sedan already has it.

I don't believe there is rapid brake wear on the X and the problem of excess brake dusting on the front wheels has improved with the 05's.

I have not had a problem with my 05X, whereas there are a lot of people that complain of many squeaks and rattles in their cars. I had one annoying squeak by my dash and drivers door and it is gone, I now have almost 10,000 miles on our X.

I understand that there is a factory sport suspension but it is hard to tell if it is something for the G35x model. Search for sport suspension yourself and you get a TON of coupe and 6MT info.
There is no extra suspension package offered on the X. I believe it is a bit stiffer than the stock rwd suspension to compensate for the extra weight with the awd. There are a few people on the board that have lowered their X's.

I did not know about the key in the 05? I thought it was an addition to the 06 as listed in this thread?
The intelligent key is offered on the 05 X for sure.

I'm only going to answer the questions that i can give some form of an answer to (without sounding stupid )

2. I have seen lots about squeaks and rattles - not too concerned here cause I love a challenge!
I have an 05x and I do experience rattling sounds when I drive, it's nothing HUGE but it can get annoying. Also I've noticed on certain songs the rattling gets very noticable. However, this forum has links to TSBs that cover this problem.

3. I understand that there is a factory sport suspension but it is hard to tell if it is something for the G35x model. Search for sport suspension yourself and you get a TON of coupe and 6MT info.
To the best of my knowledge the x comes with a standard sports suspension and on large bumps and potholes you tend to fill it. As mentioned above it's probably to help with the added weight of the awd system. This could be in my head but after I changed my stock tires to the Avon M550 (i changed due to poor rating of the stock bridgestones) bumps felt a little better

4. I did not know about the key in the 05? I thought it was an addition to the 06 as listed in this thread?
The intelligent key system is part of the premium package in the 05x.

The car is amazing but a lack of bluetooth and projectors get a little bit annoying, but doesnt make/break the car. If bluetooth and projectors are your thing than get the 06, if not (or you just want to do it yourself) then an 05 will save you money.

I havent tested it out in the snow yet, but i can tell you that during downpours this car feels as good as it does on a sunny day. To answer your questions you asked Wayne;

I love my car and some days driving it is my only escape. The rattles don't bug me like other people on this forum. The seats are very comfortable compared to other cars in its class. No car is perfect, but imho this one comes close. I test drove a ton of awd cars before this and the only 2 i considered besides the g35x was the bmw 330xi and the subaru legacy gt limited. The 330 was waaaaay to much for everything i could have gotten in the g35x and the legacy just wasnt flashy enough (although my roommate owns one and i do drive enjoy driving it every once in a while).

would it do it again? i wouldnt even have to think about it.

welcome to the forum!

I picked up my 05X in July. We love it. Haven't needed to use the navi much, and have found that it is very limited on it's door to door guidance once you leave the metro area (Live in Minneapolis). On a trip to IA you only have 2 cities that have door to door guidance.

The car drives fantastic. Of course that is compared to the 2000 Passat GLX that I came from!!

And I hear you on the 6MT, but this is not Europe and we all have to get used to that.

Hard driver: 12-17mpg
Easy driver: 17-22mpg

There are lots of posts on this. I haven't seen a G35X better than 22 mpg.

I've seen very few non-X sedans do much better than this..

Welcome here - if you get the X you won't be disappointed - great car.

Everyone has pretty much answered your question but I will add that while there is a lot of talk about rattles, brake wear, and other issues, there are no major problems with the new G35's in general. If there are any problems, it seems like most dealers are good at dealing with them.
