I love Toronto! If their summer weather were year round I'd move there!
If you compare our prices to England or other areas that are unbelievably high (last I heard over $7 US dollars quite a while back, probably higher now) - we're not doing too badly, but like everything it's all relative.
The post is accurate. I live in the Toronto area and filled up this morning at $4.23 US per gallon. Originally Posted by OCG35

The universal healthcare we have does not get any funds from the gas tax. It is paid for by our income taxes.

Something interesting I learned lately - the problem is not the lack of oil but the refiniries to make gas. Pumping more oil is not going to solve anything. Because of politics and enviromentalists, there has not been a new refinery built in 25 years. Another problem I talked about before is that there are over 30 different kinds of gas being produced for different areas. All these different types of fuel aim at reducing pollutents but in different ways. If everyone would use one or maybe two types of fuel, then it would be much easier and cheaper. One solution I think the govt. needs to consider is reducing or eliminating tax on gas until things can stabilize.

Gas City is ALWAYS a ripoff. They're some sh*tty downstate company. They consistently charge more than BP and Shell. I refuse to buy gas there. Guess what: Gas is actually cheaper in Chicago proper than in the burbs. The local shell was at $3.19 a week ago for reg (highest I've seen) and now is only $3.25. There are a number of stations in the city at $3.18/gal for reg. Originally Posted by MrBig

My parents in Frankfort have Gas City and Clark at $3.31/gal. Of course, down the street, Shell was $2.85 and BP was $3.09. Amazing, huh? There is some MAJOR gouging going on.

I have heard of the now infamous $6/gallon price here in Atlanta on two local news feeds. Haven't seen it, but definitely saw lines, 40-60 cent increases just yesterday (from 2.67 to 3.19, all after lunch), and saw at least two stations out of gas on the way to work this morning. After reading some online articles on the subject, the culprit for the spike appears to be both shut-down refineries, damaged Gulf of Mexico drilling wells, as well as at least one major pipeline coming from the Louisiana area being damaged. Reportedly, this has caused the gas suppliers to cap the supplies in the area. All this seems to have caused an emotional reaction, assumptions of shortfalls, etc., so everyone went and filled up. And emptied the stations. Don't you just love the general public? Also reported is that the Atlanta area is largely supplied by a pipeline from Savanah, which is fine, and that the Louisiana pipeline should be back working by the weekend. We'll see.

Good Afternoon; here in Winnipeg, Canada, this morning driving in all the stations were at $1.08CDN/Litre for regular 87 octane. Most stations reduce that amount by 3.5-7 cents/litre, so gas was about $4.00CDN per US gallon or about $3.20 US per US gallon. Premium was about .10 a lite more or about $3.60US per US Gallon.
Remember than our CDN dollar is worth about 84cents US which translates to about 1.20CDN for one US buck.
The days of $3.00US per gallon gas are here to stay as long as oil stays around $70US a barrel.
Anything above the $70 and the gas will go higher.
Have a great day;

Here on the west coast of Canada we are paying about $1.09/litre = $4.16/US Gallon.
btw... it makes no sense to convert this to US dollars because our incomes are not in US dollars. On average we pay in the order of 5.5 months of our income as taxes to our Provincial and Federal governments. In addition, a significant amount of taxes on our gasoline are to subsidize public transit -- so every time I tank up I am helping someone to take the bus.
I was in Europe a few years ago and tanked up at $2.20/litre = $8.33/US Gallon -- so $5.00/US gallon is not that far a reach here in Canada & US.

This will only happen when the world is out of oil. Our government has way to much invested in oil and oil producing countries to ever let another fuel take over as the primary source of energy. Think about it, who would we bomb, who would we be afraid of, what country will ever let us take ownership?Originally Posted by erikill
My thoughts on the matter and a friend suggested it, is to set up a giant think tank like the 3 mile island project and come up with alternatives. Make cars that run on garbage or somehow convert garbage into fuel. This would remove our dependency on foreign oil.

well gov't in general sucks..I'm a libertarian lets downsize the govt for once and fire incompetant people instead of let them continue to work so you don't get downgraded in a level / pay band. I agree the gov't won't doanything and this is a chance for someone like BP or a big oil tycoon to just jump ahead of everyone and say the extra 10 cents you pay now will help us create a new fuel alterternative..hows that for marketing lol. Yeah well oil is why our economy is goin crazy, end foreign dependency on oil and we can export our alternative and put them outta business :-P I've heard stories about that hotel in United Arab Emerites that is ridiculously huge, the prince dude who owns that probably wipes his a$$ with US 100's since every barrel sold is prac that. I did see a show a while ago about they have some chemical process to generate fuel from tires and something else..it was something in the ethanol families, I forget what gasoline is.

There are means to make fuel from other sources that will run in an unmodified car. One that I can think of is corn and they actually sell it at the pumps for less than regular in parts of the midwest. The problem with this corn gas and other alternative fuels is transportation. You need to move massive amounts long distances. Over the years, we have built an infrastructure of pipes to deliver oil across the country. The corn gas cannot be run through it because it is too strong and will clean out all the gunk left behind by the oil.
There are other fuels like natural gas and such but cars need to be modified to run it. There is also a lot of coal in this country that has been left untouched because oil is cheaper. Everything has a cost attatched to it and is not so simle to implement. It's easy to blame oil companies and Arabs but the problem is much more complicated and solutions take time. At least the general population is now more aware of the problems and hopefully we will start to see some solutions very soon.

It's only going to keep going up (for a while anyway) - we might as well get use to it. Prior to this situation So Cal has been some of the highest priced... Now I feel lucky that today I only paid 3.08 for premium (91).
Never thought I'd feel lucky about paying that price for gas! But I think that’s what the oil companies have been doing – periodically gouging so that when prices flatten out everyone feels “lucky” they aren’t paying more.

jawjaw thats the whole point of the massive thinktanks..figure this stuff out, maybe the garbage fuel could be pumped through the pipelines. My understanding is the pipelines aren't crude but gasoline / refined, so how is there gunk in them, unless its only 1/2 refined? I don;t think where the pipeline comes into atlanta there are refineries, but hey i could be wrong. Hey general public is always the ones who create mass panic, a person is smart, people are stupid. I give it a few years of college research, I participated in the Future Truck program which was a task for college kids to make hybrid SUV's. More stuff like that, free research practically and u get a variety of approaches, ours was make a powerful suv (410 hp :-D) whereas other schools put in dinky saturn engines. It's only time before someone figures this out and gets rich lol
$hit, your lucky to only pay 2.77, i live in san diego and i paid 2.18 the other day, $54 to fill up the tank.

This whole gas thing in the US has been coming for some time now and we are partly to blame.
The president and congress could have forced companies to produce vehicles that ran on something other than gas a long time ago. Of course they would lost "donations" and they would probably get into an "accident."
If you checked how much money the oil executives made 2 years ago and how much they make now I bet it is much more now. Sure, the oil prices have went up but if the oil prices cause gas to go up 9 cents, why not raise it 10 cents and make more millionaires in th process?
I could be right, half right or totally wrong but keep this in mind: for everything we know and learn on CNN there are thousands of things going on in the back room!

I think gas went up 30 cent over night. Do i feel stupid for not buying yesterday, but i think i'm gonna fill up today and have no need for my car until monday. Man will i feel smart if gas goes from 3.15 up to 3.50+ come monday.
Honestly i feel that it is good these prices are high. MAybe we will become more conservative car pool etc. A lot of things will happen because of this. We shouldn't bitch and moan all this means is you will restructure your life and how you do things. For me i will just buy less clothes and spend it on gas!!!
