Porter Cable for a Beginner
I know there are many threads already on this machine. However, I had a basic question. I have never used a buffer at all or done any buffing. I really want this machine as I, like some others, got the unrequested dealer-installed swirl-mark package. Is it pretty user friendly? Is it easy to ruin the paint with this machine? Any insights would be greatly appreciated.
Also, I want to get the 7336 at Lowe's, and I know it comes with a 6" counterweight. Can I use a 5" backing plate on this or will there be some issues?

Heya. First, check out autopia.org, you will find tons of info over there. Second, the PC is very user-friendly, it's only got one button and one **** for the speed, and you would pretty much have to be a monkey to mess your paint up with it. I think the only real way to damage your paint with a PC is to throw the PC at the car. Truly, as long as you follow the rule that you should use the least abrasive polish+pad necassary to do the job, you'll be fine. No, there will be no issue using the 6" counterweight with a 5" backing plate, that's what I do.
My only other advice is be patient. It won't work as fast as a rotary but it will work. Don't apply too much pressure, don't move too fast (as a matter of fact, move slow), use the right product and the right amount of it, and you'll be rockin'.

I have the PC 7336 as well as a few friends. I have the 5" flexible backing plate and use the 6" polishing and buffing pads on the plate. It works great.
