small oil filter
small oil filter
Just changed my oil and filter for the first time. I was shocked to see how small the oil filter was. I would have liked the filter to have been much larger. It makes sence to me that the larger the filter the more surface area there would be to filter. My past vehicles have been SUV's and Trucks that had filters triple the size of the Infiniti's. Is there more chance for the filter to clog on such a small filter?

There are excellent 3rd party filters available.
(lots of threads on this already)
For OEM, use the one from the Max instead of the G (it's longer)
OIL Filter#s
G35 = 15208-65F00
Maxima = 15208-9E000

Yeah, the filter is small, but if that's what Infiniti recommends, that's what I'm using. I don't want them to come back and deny some warranty issue because of a filter (I'm sure they'd try). I use the Mobil 1 High Performance Filter with Mobil 1 synthetic. I've been happy so far.

I use the K&N oil filter on my G. I use the HP-1008 K&N filter, which is the same small size as the OEM filter. I read somewhere that it will also take the HP-1006 K&N. I honestly don't know if the 1006 is any bigger than the 1008.
I love the K&N because they have a handy 1-inch nut on the end that allows you to use a socket and ratchet. No more stuck filters for me
I also change every 3,000 miles without exception. The K&N filter being a "high-flow" performance filter it should be replaced more frequently. I changed the oil and filter at 1,500 just to be safe though.
just my 2 cents

I used the NAPA Gold filter it's made by WIX, who is suppose to make excellent filters. I used mobil 1 extended performance oil, they say it's good for 15000 miles, but i'll change at 4000 just because my engine only has 3500 miles on it. Once it's worn in more i'll run it 5000 miles.

There seems to be a greater push these days to extended intervals.
With properly engineered products I'm sure this can work.
But there is no way I'd trust product application statements alone.
JMHO but there is no way I'd run those intervals w/o doing sample analysis.
Also, the interval should be increased in steps as verified by testing.
Another thing to keep in mind.......
The filter should still be changed on the regular service interval.
It will only hold so much filtrate.
Extended oil change
Mercedes and Bimmer have been changing oil at very extednded intervals, 12-15K with Mobil 1. The dealers have been doing this for years. I know because I used to own a E46 and currently have a E500.
