Exhaust Help - Custom Piping

I want to add a custom exhaust to my car, but am not impressed with any of the aftermarket offerings for a sedan.

I want my local muffler shop to put together an exhaust using a Magnaflow muffler and an upgraded Y-Pipe (I already have the coupe midpipe). Is there a setup they can create that would not rob me of too much backpressure? I don't want to loose horsepower because of this setup. I also don't want an overly loud, droning exhaust.

If anybody has any experience with this, please share.

Why the haha at Magnaflow. Magnaflow is one of the best aftermarket mufflers out there. Unlike some other brand names (Flowmaster), the Magnaflow actually flows. Many others are very restrictive, even if they sound more aggressive (Flowmaster).

When testing mufflers in our F-body club, the Magnaflow was one of the best, flowing much better than stock on that car. The Blowmaster actually flowed less than stock.

If I was putting together a custom exhaust, the Mag would be my choice as well.

I did a lot of research on the subject for my own car. I spoke to different experts and drivers on the subject and I concluded there is no ONE single option that will yield the H/P low end and top end, maintain back pressure in check and decent sound levels.

But, I found the new generation Sillen catback is the best value for the money and will yield some decent gains. They claim 22 RWHP but I'm not sure about that. It sounds really nice and designed really well for a perfect fit.

In my '05 I changed to the coupe midpipe first and found ABSOLUTELY no gains or difference in sound. Then I added the HKS and again there were no noticeable gains but the sound was awesome. But the back pressure was gone and felt sluggish out of the hole and overtime it developed a slight drone especially with people in the back seat.

So I decided to put back my OEM system and I can tell you the car is performing like it should. I only changed the tips to full length chrome tips that come flush along the bumper line.

What I'm planning on doing is to get the Carwford cats and JIC Bullet Y-pipe and leave the OEM middy and muffler. I believe this combo will yield more HP gains increase the sound level slightly (deeper) and keep the droning out better than any other set up.

Experimenting may be a costly and maybe frustrating route to take. If you can handle the Stillen (new gen) that would be your best bet and if you're not 100% happy you can modify it.

Thanks for the info, Chico- I also assumed that keeping the OEM muffler/coupe midpipe, and adding a Y-pipe on would yield the most cost effective gains, however, I did want to reduce the weight of our OEM muffler (as well as get something that looks/sounds more agressive).

I need to decide what route to take, as the Stillen exhaust is not quite what I'm looking for. I am thinking of doing something really extreme with my sedan, but am afraid that it will look too ricey. I played around with many custom exhaust setups in my Maxima, and was best off with straight pipes from the headers back (catless). Of course, I had to monitor the A/F non-stop. I definitely don't want to do that again.

Looks like it's time to place an order for that Tanabe Y-pipe.

I disagree completely. The brands you mention above may be popular, especially with the Ricer crowds, but that doesn't make them quality. And my main point was air flow. The Magnaflow flows well while giving a nice sound (not fartcan). That's all.

I've used the Magnaflows on 10 sec cars with very good results. You can choose whichever brand you want.

i've only heard good things about the Fuji exhaust, would the magnaflow and/or custom setup be better in terms of drone and all around power?

I don't know. I've never used the Fuji. A few years ago we flow tested mufflers for the F-body's, and the Magnaflow was a top performer, and IMO, sounded great.

I'm willing to bet that any aftermarket muffler will give you at least some drone......

magnaflow=made in uSA. magnaflows are on more cars then HKS,TANABE and all them other brands that just slap their name on a pipe with out any R&D, magnaflow is backed by MARIO ANDRETTI and its been around before HKS,BLITZ or fukmetoo exhaust. *** exhaust are nice but they tend to sound like a fart can. where as the magnaflow rumbles like torque master.

It's nice to see you're loyal to American made products. But c'mmon you're starting to make no sense. Just because a race car driver gets paid millions to go on TV and print media...doesn't mean he knows the R&D behind the product. It is called ADVERTISING!!! POWER OF EMOTIONAL PERSUATION. It obviously works on you.

I think Magnaflow is a good product but so are HKS, FUJI, etc. Just because it's been around longer, it doesn't mean it's better. Not every brand is suitable to every make in the market.

Take a deep breath and let's carry on.

magnaflow does R&D their products. you can go with the drone from a fart can if you want but i rather have the rumble of power. no one would put their name on a product if they didnt stand behind it. he has a reputation to keep.
