Brake line pressure problem? Pumping brakes

I have noticed on my 05 6mt that when braking, the pedal goes down about half the way, before any real brakeing occurs. If i take my foot off the brake and instantly reapply to the brake (pumping once) there is almost no "play" in the brakes. Is this normal for these cars. Does anyone have similar presure build up problem?

Have you worked on your brakes recently? After I replaced mine I was having that problem due to air in the brake line. After bleeding them they were back to normal. If you havent had them opened up, you might want to get that checked out SOON!

Mine is as you describe also. I was wondering if there was air in my brake lines; but since you brought it up, maybe it is normal.

I havent done any work on my brakes, only 3k miles. I did notice when I was under the car changing the oil that the front left caliper had som darker oilly spillage on it, but didnt know if it was from the factory, or something.

Soft pedal = probable air in system.

I just got off the phone with the dealer service tech and he says that is the way it is designed to be. I told him I thought that was Bull****, because I have drove alot of cars, and none of them are like that. So I will schedule for inspection and let everyone know what they say.
I also told him that the back of the caliper looked a little wet, like some fluid at some point got on the back of the caliper. He said, and I swear, " I dont think the caliper has any fluid in it to leak" What a dumb ***.

I would bet they didn't fully tighten the bleed screw........screwing you in the process.

Does your Tech think the brakes are remote-controlled or something? JEEZ!

I just got back from the dealer. They drove it and said that nothing is wrong with it, that that is the way it was designed. I think its BS., But I did driver the salemans coupe while I was waiting, and his brakes were similar to mine, not as bad, yet. So I dont know. We will see what happens.

I'm no mechanic, but I sure as hell know you are NOT supposed to pump your brakes to get them to work.

Its not that they dont work, its that there is about 4 inches of travel when you first apply the brakes until you feel presure. If you take your foot off and quickly reapply, then there is pressure at the top of the pedal travel. The car stops fine, but I know when the car was new 2 months ago, I had immediate pressure.

I would do whatever it takes to make the dealer bleed the brakes for you. If all else fails, you can always do it (I did a slow gravity bleed that was not difficult at all). I've never had brakes lose pressure like that, and I've had cars as high as 170k miles.

How did you do the gravity bleed. Open the furthest first and let sit, and do one by one, or all at same time? And for how long.

I only had to bleed the fronts, but my brake guy had me do the following:

Start farthest away from driver - in my case passenger wheel
Get large DOT3 brake fluid, turn upside down in reservoir (it wont spill over)
Open BOTH bleeders on passenger side, let sit for 30 min
Have someone push brake pedal to the floor, close outside then inside bleeder
*make sure they HOLD the pedal down til you are done
Now do the same for the driver side

I am not sure which order you would use to do all 4 corners, but this worked great for me and got out all of the air. I went from pumping them 2-3 times after the air got in to having them grab immediately after bleeding them.

If I left anything out, someone feel free to chime in. This worked very well for me though.

Good luck!
