In all my blathering, I forgot to say that this looks like a stop-gap measure until a redesign is implemented for the 2007 model year.

I'm gonna say here and now that I'd bet the current electronics / integration will be gutted in favor of the M's system, probably almost directly lifted with a few features turned off or missing (no need for Entertainment packages, dvd playback, etc.). Since the system's already designed, and was probably designed with longevity in mind, it will probably be fitted into the 2006 FX refresh, and the 2007 G35 and a new Q45 if they ever get around to it... That's what I would do anyway... it'd be cheaper than having so many different systems, easier to maintain, and easier to upgrade...

Yeah I bet that the 07 G will have the Nav/BT lifted straight from the current M. Also I know for a fact that the new DVDs wont work with the 05 Nav.
Here is the source

http://www.infinitihelp.com/Ownershi.../ITB05-050.htm

Note that 6.X and 7.X are not interchangable and the 06 uses 7.1

I think you're right. Not knowing how Infiniti did things in the past, our G came with a navigation system owner's manual that covers ALL 2006 Infiniti vehicles. I have to check, but I'm pretty sure that our March-delivered M did not have a 'universal' nav manual. Is this new for Infiniti or has it been this way in the past? These two cars are our first foray into anything Nissan/Infiniti.

According to the manual, the M is the only vehicle (I don't know about the Q as it is not included in this book) with voice recognition for the nav system. This is a huge advantage that the M has, as the joystick or dial doesn't provide the most user-friendly set-up for entering information. That being said, the system seems to have picked up a little speed over our early '06 M in terms of manual inputs. If there is only one character possible after a certain combination which you have typed, it will add it automatically. You can also search for a destination by name. For example, you can input 'BORDERS' and any match with that title in the system will come up, with phone number (if available), and you can then navigate to the nearest Borders bookstore.

I definitely agree that in a few years all Infiniti vehicles will have an M-style dial for inputting information. The M's system is very robust and nicely integrates virtually all vehicle functions, particularly thanks to the voice recognition system. It serves as the hub of the car, while in the G the nav screen is dispensable if you are not using the navigation system.

I look forward to seeing what Infiniti comes up with for the redesigned G.

The photos show up okay for me on a Mac running Safari or Firefox. Is the page loading fully for you?

Thanks for the pics, saabfan.
Although I've grown quite satisfied with my 05 nav system after 2.5 months with it (didn't like it at first), the updated graphics of the 06 are quite pleasant to look at, a definite improvement. Cheers...

Oh, and probably either cheaper, or even standard on most nice cars.

The same thing happened with digital cameras years ago. My folks got an apple quicktake for about $900 that could take 640x480 blurry pictures in the early-to-mid-90's. Around 2000-2001, a friend of mine bought a 2 megapixel camera for $400 that has a good 1-second delay, and a really slow shutter speed. A year ago I bought a 5 megapixel camera that was smaller, lighter, and faster than all of the above for $350.

You can see the same thing happen for CD players, DVD players, HD TV, and many other technologies. I wanted all of these things, but realized after I bought my DVD player for $300 and saw one just last week in WalMart for $30, that the same thing was happening with each cool new gizmo. The march of technology continues on.
So how's your B&W TV and rotary dial phone? Soon - those color TV modules might just be cheap enough and advanced to enough to buy one!

Wait a minute - I just realized you have a computer! NOW THAT'S FUNNY!

Yea - I agree - by 2030 - all this stuff should be cool enough to buy!
