Somewhat frustrated by Manumatic

It seems too easy to move between D and manumatic. I was doing a bit of spirited driving yesterday in manumatic and switched to drive while taking a tight corner. I've also knocked the car into manumatic while driving a couple times. Do you guys keep the gas floored between shifts or let up? One last thing, I've had my car 5 months and it smelled a bit yesterday after my spirited driving in manumatic mode....is this normal (smelled almost rubbery).

When I first purchased my g35x I was shifting the gears with the foot off just like how I drive my previous manual cars. Then after reading the forum it seems like some leave their foot on the gas which really doesn't do anything because during the transition shift the rise in the rpm does nothing. Driving with foot off feels more like m/t especially when you let go off the foot and how the engine pauses a bit. The answer is I would leave the foot on the gas on a lazy day.

As for the D to MM mode, yeah I think I've knock it over to MM mode by accident once during corning.

I used to let my foot of the gas when I was shifting in manumatic ... you have to know the trans(shift time in each gear and rpm) for it to end up good though. But if you get it right it gives a nice burst of power.

Are you talking about up-shifting or down-shifting? if your up-shifting leave your foot on the throttle if it is performance that your looking for.
Some people like that manual shift feel and sound while lifting their off the throttle.
Down-shifting you will probable want to remove your foot from the throttle since downshifting is used for reducing speed.. unless it is a rolling start, such as a 30 mph start, then keep your foot on the throttle..
I also was goofing around the other day and thought I had it in manual mode, accellerated from the start and went to shift into 2 with my foot on the throttle, since I was in D the little up-shift threw me into N.. talk about missing a gear with an AT?

my car has a strong rubber smell coming from it after driving. Which I have no idea why, i've noticed this with my contential and dunlop tires. Usually happens after driving on the highway at 80+. I don't think it has anything to do with the tires though.

For Harley and Smedly:
After a "spirited" drive my tires have the same rubbery smell to them. I have Bridgestone S0-3's and on my way home at night i take a sharp turn at 30mph and up a 1-2 mile hill at 60-65mph. It get the tires nice and warmed up. The smell you're experiencing is the tires after they get heated up. I think of it like its the smell that lets me know my tires are doing a good job sticking to the road. It's nothing to worry about just a normal part of a tire.

That burning rubber smell has been discussed alot here.

I had it real bad on a 2005 loaner with 6K on it when driving through heavy snow conditions. It stayed around for another day of highway driving, but I do not think it has to do with the tires or the chemical undercoating burning off. Most of the first days driving was at < 40MPH on snow, and the undercoating burnoff would have happened long before, if at all.

Funny you should mention it, yes - happens to me all the time during shifty roads. What year is yours? As I think the 04 and 05 have different shift levers, right? Does changing from manu to auto change? Cant' remember since I test drove both of them.

Yup. Coming from driving a stick the last 15 years, this was a BIG change for me... but I haven't noticed much of a dif whether you let off or not.

Yup. Happens here to ... think of it this way - in manu you are working the tranny MUCH harder then in auto mode, right? So it's normal. Remember what your clutch would smell like when you whomped on it good?

Where are you getting this fact from? Why is working in MM mode harder on the tranny??? Isn't it the other way around? You are shifting less than in D which it constantly upshifts for you. I use MM mode like 90% of the time when I drive.

I don't let off the gas in manu-matic mode.

I have also done what another poster mentioned; thinking that I was in manu-matic mode, but I was in normal D mode. I was pushing the car and I shifted it into neutral, thinking I was upshifting. It was quite a surprise as I expected to continue accelerating at a quick rate.

Love the manu-matic mode.

Actually it does seem manu mode keeps the car from shifting down to an easier gear and the engine gives you more of a revving sound. The smell seems to be coming from the front of the car, but I'm not too concerned. It is hard to unlearn a real shifting pattern. I hit the shifter down between 3rd and 4th due to years of driving a clutch.
