Shifting

On the '03s, I'm not sure of the '04s, in MM mode the car does not downshift for you as you are slowing down, you have to do it your self, otherwise you will be in 4th gear and a stop. Infiniti corrected it on the '05s. As you decelerate, the car downshifts automatically for you.

I had the opposite happen to me. I was in MM mode thinking I was AT mode, and the car was in 1st gear, I floored it and I think the RPM reached well above 5000, and my car did the herky jerky and acted like it wanted to stall. Talk about embarrassing.

I think the car downshifts for you regardless. It's just that in the pre- 05's they don't tell you about it.

I think in the 03s (some at least), the "manumatic" transmission uses gear ranges... so if the number displayed is 4, then the car could be in gears 1 to 4. So if you're at a stop, the transmission may have downshifted to 1.

In the 04s and later (and maybe 03.5s... I don't know), the number displayed is the actual gear. Thats why when you come to a stop in those and you were previously at a gear higher than 1 the transmission will automatically downshift into 1 (as indicated by the number change in the dash).

Yeah, I have sone this once, as well as thinking I was in MM and trying to upshift, but was actually in D....so I have felt like a jackass TWICE!

I have an 03.5, and it works just as you stated it does with the 04s. Don't know about the 03s or 05s.

It's up to you how fast you want to be going. You will be hauling *** if you redline 5 gears.
