Yes, the engine pinging drove me nuts too, but it wasn't what got me out of the car. I ended up trading for a new 08 5AT Sport because my clutch started to act bizzarro (https://g35driver.com/forums/drivetr...ml#post3257621). I have since found the new owner as she works a few blocks from where I do. Her and her husband have done quite a bit to the car, including intake, exhaust, and (I believe) a chip. She said it was now putting out 296hp at the wheels, I believe. Interestingly, she also told me that they had the engine replaced due to the oil consumption issue.

Fortunately, I have had only two very minor problems with my 08 after 42K+ miles, but I do miss the manual transmission

Wow 296hp that's quite an improvement! So I found a couple of tuning shops out here in Phoenix and I got an appt on Wednesday to put my G on the dyno. They'll attempt to diagnose the pinging by looking at the A/F ratio's and other data. If they can't diagnose it then I'll go to this other tuning shop called UMS in Tempe that guarantees to eliminate my engine ping by applying a custom tune specifically for my car.

Stay tuned...

Using unleaded gas w/ an octane rating lower than recommended can cause persistent, heavy spark knock. If severe it can cause engine damage. If you detect spark knock while holding a steady speed on level roads, then you should have your dealer correct this problem. Light spark knock for short periods of time while accelerating or under load is normal in the RevUp engine.

Guys, I haven't read the whole thread but went through the same pinging issue in a 2007 6MT with 36K miles. Just replaced my spark plugs, recommended NGK from PLFR5A-11 the car brought from factory to PLFR6A-11 ($10.00 each). The aftermath, no pinging at all, I couldn't believe that just moving to a colder plug would do it. I live in the caribbean meaning that temps here are always pretty high... Just found that the dealership guys broke a small 90º pipe connector that goes right underneath the air inlet main pipe, they glued it with "crazy glue" and even left the hose barely connected to avoid breaking it again. That was causing a rough idle at some point. I just used some real epoxy and the small fitting didn't even tried to break when putting the hose back again, clamped and till the end as it should be. I use either 91 or 93 octanes, no pinging. Car is working fine since.

Pinging came back after replacing the spark plugs (colder ones). Today I filled my tank with 93 octane gas + one bottle of Lucas treatment. No pinging so far and the engine feels even more responsive! Keep you posted.

Ping totally solved? Lucas gas treatment is worth a shot. Also noticed that pinging is reduced after switching off from shell gas. The Lucas treatment might simply raise the octane level which would result in less ping. I'll give it a try.

Well, heard it couple of times but barely noticeable (with radio and A/C off) after posting the update. Today no pinging at all. Will also install the oil reservoir between the PCV and the intake just to eliminate any trace of oil that could go into the combustion chambers.

I've tried the PCV thing and it didn't do jack but just make a mess. Before the PCV option try changing your intake air filter and clean the MAF with the appropriate cleaner. I've noticed the most improvement this way. Now my filter is getting dirty again and starting to hear pinging sometimes but not so bad as before. I've also stopped using shell gas.
