MREV kit shows itself again! 1 STI down, 1 lost (sorta) both not stock
(Disclaimer) I rarely do any type of street racing. I am 31 years old, and know the conditions to do it safely. I wanted to have a little fun with the STIs to see how I bad I would lose, but didn't expect it to turn out the way it did.
Against my 05 G35 Sedan 6mt. I have the MREV kit (one of the beta testers), and Z-tube. I ran into a few buddies last night and we were going to a meet with other cars. We were on a major highway in town in sections that were wide open. One is a silver STI, he has a few mods. He didn't specify what, but lets just say they were freaked out that I actually pulled on him. The other STI has a good handful of mods. His was black.
Basically this is what happened. It was late last night, and we had a few bursts runs from 45-110~. The silver one, we both launched. I actually let him launch before me each time. He would get the jump slightly (about 2 feet), and once my power band got to its prime, I would start pulling ahead of him, he was to my back doors when we had to let off. We did this 3 times, all the same results.
Then the black sti came up to me. I knew he had a good amount of mods and knew I would loose. It was expected. We both would hit it (he did before me again), and got the jump. He jumped a full half a car on me from 45~. I wasn't able to hold him till higher speeds. He stedily slowly pulled me. I was still at his rear bumper when we evened out on accelerating. Not sure what speed we were at, but I was close to the top of 4th when I did this one.
The way he described it to me was this. Took off in 2nd, I was still there, he hit 3rd, I was still there, hit 4th, I was still there, hit 5th, and I was still there! heheheh
Guys, they were impressed! This mod is unbelievable on this car! I took another G35 guy for a drive and he was amazed on how much grunt the car has now.

Doesn't surprise me. Most stock STI's only post 98-101mph trap speeds which is right in line with what 6MT should be getting. Even with water injection, UTEC, and a handful of other bolt-ons, my friend's 04 STI only could post 104mph traps. Of course his 60 foots are in the 1.6/low 1.7 range and he is running 12.6-12.7
Basically these car's are relatively weak above 70mph. When he had just a turbo catback, we ran each other at the track in May (my car 03 5AT with Z-pipe). We had similiar reaction times, he pulled 1.8 60 foots and ran 13.4@100 to my low 14.5 at almost 98mph with a high 2.1 60 foot. By the 1/8 mile, it really didn't look like he was pulling much on me (about 7 cars ahead). Usually when cars put a hurting like that on me that quickly, they keep running away. His car wasn't doing that. My G gets about 21.5mph in the last 1/8 mile and his STI (stock or with mods) gets right around 20mph. His car is all about the 1/8 mile. The gearing those cars is rediculous too. He has to shift 4 times and the 1-2 shift comes in the blink of an eye when he's yanking 1.6 60 foots.
I can also say this about my years of street racing back in the 1990s. It's worthless. I beat a ton of cars I shouldn't have beaten. I simply beat the driver. On the street, reaction time isn't factored and it makes a HUGE difference if one driver reacts quicker or slower, even if by a few tenths of a second. Russ, take your car to the track. You live in Texas and the tracks should be open year round. Street racing is a horrible way to gauge your car's performance.

If you're going to run an STI - that's the way to do it - a high sped roll.
Play to all of your strengths, and all of their weaknesses.
People think they are really fast... but it's mainly the magazine 0-60 times they are thinking of... not to mention the super-sticky tires. After the launch, the AWD is an acceleration liability, not an advantage.
Like Daveb mentioned - look at their trap times. The 1/4 tells so much more about a car than 0-60...

...Way to waste a post.
The MREV kit is something that gives 20 hp and 10 tq...or something like that.
It's kind of a secret as to what it is exactly, but I think it's some kind of a plenum/spacer that has to do with the way the car takes in air.
From the "beta testers" experiences, it really gives power to the car in the higher RPM's...like 5k and up.

Sorry, but I'm really going to come across as an a$$ on this, and I don't want to, honestly.
First, the guy that suggested searching wasn't wasting a post. It seems like every time someone mentions MREV someone else asks "what is it?". Well, Doogie did a search. Did you actually read those threads to figure out what it is? There's no substitute for doing one's own research.
Also, there is no "secrecy" as to what the MREV actually is anymore. It has been released, disclosed, and discussed ad nauseum. It just takes a little effort to find out what it is.
And it doesn't really give that much power up top. It's strength is it's mid-range punch. In fact, it actually loses a few hp at the top end, > ~6300rpms. I am in now way impuning the product; in fact, to my knowledge I already have one purchased just waiting for installation.
And for further clarification, it is only available for the revup motors. If anyone doesn't know what the revup is, I suggest following this link:

Hint - the above links to the search results for the term "revup".

I was going to hit the track yesterday (friday), but two of my friends were busy and I needed someone to video the runs. So I have to wait for them to be ready for me to run!

I just thought that statement was a little confusing. I didn't realize there was a safe way to street race. I thought street racing was inherently unsafe.
To be honest, I wouldn't of commented if you replaced that statement with something like, "I rarely do any type of street racing. I know it's not the safest or smartest thing to do, but I couldn't pass up an oppurtunity to run with some STi's on the open road. Please don't try this yourself". If you're going to use a disclaimer, why not be honest? The fact that you're 31 yrs old doesn't qualify you as a safe street racer.
