Dunlop M3s and ice vs AWD and all seasons and ice
Very satisfied with my new Dunlop M3s in the snow, but last night after a couple hrs of sleet, I had to go up a hilly road which was literally a sheet of ice and I could not make it up and had to turn around. My wife came home about 10 minutes after me and took the same road and had no problems with her AWD Jag with all season tires. I guess it does make a big difference with 4 wheels trying to get traction vs. 2 wheels especially in ice. (I never bought into the school of thought that says RWD with snows is as good as AWD with all seasons for moving the car forward-might apply for stopping, however.)
I too live in Jersey and got home last night around 10:30pm. This was my first test for my Dunlop M3s. I have to say I was very impressed. Though I didn't go up any major inclines the car behaved great. Front wheels didnt slip and the rear wheels only spun when pushed very hard. My entire development was sheet of ice. Though certainly not as good as AWD, the car would have been undriveable with out the snows.
Very satisfied with my purchase!

I read an article on the Tire Rack site a while ago where they tested winter tires vs. all-seasons on a hockey rink. On glare ice the all seasons had something like 66% of the traction of the winters under accelleration at the limits of the traction control system. Four wheels @ 66% is better than two wheels @ 100%.

You're definitely right that snows on a 2wd don't equate to an awd's ability to move, but she may have been more impressed with your snows going down that same hill.
Get her some snows and I'm sure she'll love you forever (or until they wear out...) LOL!!!
