2006 G35x RPMs

New owner of a G35x and just wondering what RPMs others are seeing at highway speeds of 70 MPH? Mine registered 3k RPMs and I want to make sure this is normal.

Thanks.

I noticed the same thing with my G35x with the RPM's registering in the 3K. I guess that it is normal.

Yeah mine are about 2700-2800 at 70 mph. They usually hit the 3k range at 75ish

It's normal. The X's have slightly deeper gearing therefore they'll spin a little higher than the RWD 5AT.

Yeah the RPMs are a tad higher in this model... Maybe one reason for the lower mileage. It spins about 800 RPMs more than my CLS did at 70. One benefit is that the engine is higher up in the RPM range and closer to where it develops max Torque. When it kicks down one gear you are about 4000... The only bad thing is you cannot always get it to kick down into 3rd at 75. You have to use manual mode to do that...

Interesting. I imagine the difference is in the RFD as it is for the 350Z convertible which has lower gearing to help compensate for the weight increase. Anyone know what gears the X runs? The regular 5AT uses a 3.3 rear while the 6MT uses a 3.5 rear. The 350Zevo aftermarket gears are 3.9 and are primarily intended for the 6MT cars.

I agree that it hurts mileage a tad, but I'm really glad they did it that way. I had the same engine in my 03 Altima, and the tranny and gearing difference in the G makes it much more pleasant to drive (plus a few more ponies extracted doesn't hurt either).

IMO, 3K for cruising is about perfect for this engine....

The X has the 3.5 gear.

also, if you are driving on the highway in manual mode, the torque convertor does not lock and you will cruise at about 200-300 rpms higher than you will in drive. If you dont believe me, set the cruise at 70 mph when you are in drive and look at what rpm you are at. Then put in in manual mode (of course it shifts down to 4th gear, so upshift to 5th) and then look what rpms you will be cruising at then.

my 05 6mt sedan does 3k rpm at 80mph... it'll be spinning at 2600-2700 at 70mph..

in contrast to this, my 2k2 6spd max at spins around 2200 rpms at 70mph and won't hit the 3k mark until i'm cruising at 90mph.... i kinda wish my g35 had the same 6th gear as did the maxima...

I tried this in my 2004 G35x and found this doesn't happen. What model year did you see this behavior in?

By the way here is a PDF of the gearing for the 2004 G35x. It shows the engine RPM for cruising at 80, my normal case.

Like kswan above, this is not true for my car either (05). I have done that experiment on the highway several times and my rpms are identical in M5 or D. I'm pretty sure my TC locks in M mode.

Try accelerating lightly. In MM, the rpm spikes up as soon as you press the pedal down a bit more, whereas in D they won't.

Thumbs up

Kswan,
Good work on the chart. Thanks. BTW, I also do not have the RPM bump the OP mentioned.
