A K&N or any other filter will be just as dirty in your circumstance. Don't worry about it - your filter really isn't that bad. Rotate your filter 180 degrees and reinstall. You can see that the bottom half is like new. You'll get another 10,000 out of it, then buy another filter.
I've had K&N on other cars and, honestly, in a stock daily driver, I wouldn't bother with it. The added ability of being able to clean and resue turns into a PITA when it comes time to do it. Not only will you spend 1/2 hour taking it out and cleaning it, you will need to let it sit over night so it can dry out. After that, spray it with the oil - making sure you don't over do it or your MAS will surely let you know. Then you stick the whole thing back in.
Part of owning a nice car is being able to drive it.

I think the new Amsoil Ea Air Filter is the next one for me.
Long life, washable, nanofiber technology, no oil etc.
This is also available in oil filters as well

Good article, though independent. I know a lot of folks will want to defend their particular brand of choice and that's fine. It's comon sense like indicated, more flow = more particles being able to infiltrate. Is that going to stop some of us from upgrading? Nah, after all K & N is warrantied for how many miles? If my engine blows up from haveing too many dust particles passing through my K & N, then I'll just sue them for a new engine (lol).

What's interesting is the air flow pattern - I assume that the darker areas represent higher airflow.
I remember a thread some time ago talking about this - what this pattern suggests is that much of the airflow is across the face of the intake, not directly into it.
One of my suppositions is that the stock airbox does not breathe much from the area directly in front of it (when the hood closes, there is no direct path to the outside air, and so it uses the lateral intake that sits on top of the radiator more than one might think).
Therefore some modifiction of the front cowling may benefit the air intake (cut a hole). I think Dave O actually did this (small hole) has anyone made any other modifications to the front intake areas?
Flip side is to drop in a CAI that takes in air from below the bumper, but then you have a whole new set of issues...(so keep this thought seperate)
