Truck exhaust? Smog? Dusty area? Could be any of those really. My Z's air filter was not nearly that dirty after 19K bu I am "in the country" and not near any large trucks or diesel anything.

At least the filter is in a place where its condition can easily be examined - replace as neccessary

^^ +1 that's exactly what i was going to say!

and yeah, it really depends on which areas you drive through.. i live in the bay area as well, and because of all the construction that goes on, my air filter gets dirty real fast..

A K&N or any other filter will be just as dirty in your circumstance. Don't worry about it - your filter really isn't that bad. Rotate your filter 180 degrees and reinstall. You can see that the bottom half is like new. You'll get another 10,000 out of it, then buy another filter.

I've had K&N on other cars and, honestly, in a stock daily driver, I wouldn't bother with it. The added ability of being able to clean and resue turns into a PITA when it comes time to do it. Not only will you spend 1/2 hour taking it out and cleaning it, you will need to let it sit over night so it can dry out. After that, spray it with the oil - making sure you don't over do it or your MAS will surely let you know. Then you stick the whole thing back in.

Part of owning a nice car is being able to drive it.

Interesting reading. As stated in the article, it's only common sense that a higher flowing filter would allow more dirt through.....That being said, I've used K&N for years without problems and will continue to.

But thanks for the link. A very good article.

I think the new Amsoil Ea Air Filter is the next one for me.
Long life, washable, nanofiber technology, no oil etc.

This is also available in oil filters as well

AMSOIL LINK

What was the part number? I tried the cross reference, but no match came up for 16546-0Z000. Do I have the wrong nissan part number?

Thanks!

Good article, though independent. I know a lot of folks will want to defend their particular brand of choice and that's fine. It's comon sense like indicated, more flow = more particles being able to infiltrate. Is that going to stop some of us from upgrading? Nah, after all K & N is warrantied for how many miles? If my engine blows up from haveing too many dust particles passing through my K & N, then I'll just sue them for a new engine (lol).

The Amsoil part no. for your G is EaA74. There is a link on the Amsoil site to locate a specific filter based on car model . . . However, it is a pain in the A$$ to locate.

This is what mine looked like at 15k miles. I have deviated from the stock schedule of every 30k miles and instead change it every 15k miles. My maxima used the same panel filter and was driven in the same conditions, but didn't get nearly as dirty as the filter does in the G. That front facing intake opening may open up a few ponies, but it sure lets in a lot of extra dirt too.
