6 speed manual transmission

I have heard some people complain about the 6 speed manual transmission on the G35 sedan, that is jittery, tough, not very smooth... Some magazines do not give this transmission a very good review. I would like to get opinions and reviews from people that actually have this transmission in their cars. Thinking about getting the manual myself, but I want to make sure it is a good one...

Thanks

it is not "silky-smooth" like a miata, but IT IS definitely mechanical linkage and you KNOW when you are in gear. You can feel the click before you finish the throw. This is a good thing and bad thing, Once you learn it the throws are even shorter than they appear. but until you do learn it you waste time by finishing the throw after the car is already in gear.

Make sense?

all in all, a very good manual. I honestly wish the gears were closer with 6th being a one to one

I think the biggest let down of this transmission is the lack of definition in it's gate's. It offer very little in the way of feel as you move the stick over to choose a lower gear. Going up the gears isn't a issue, it's going down. It is only when you arrive right at the gate, that it lets you feel anything, vs letting you know where the stick is 100% of the time. In other words it has a tall learning curve if you find yourself wanting to grab a lower gear or to try heal & toe manuevers. I salute anyone that doesn't find this a issue. A integra GSR or MR2 gearbox it is not. However, otherwise it does allow me to be able to click off ultra smooth full on shifts, day in and day out. Also the throttle/clutch up take relationship is quite good, allowing smooth seamless shifting no matter the situation.

I believe the shifting action is near perfection in this car. I do agree that there is little point in the 6 speeds, but it is cool. Don't get a manumatic 5sp, you'll regret it.

Re: 6 speed manual transmission

Someone mentioned a Mustang - I have one of those too - some Mustangs shift well and some are balky. My Mustang is MUCH easier to shift than my G. Someone else mentioned gate definition - that is my big complaint. Downshifts skipping more than one gear are an educated guess. I've missed a fair number of quick 6-4, 6-3, 5-3 downshifts - especially the 6-3. Aggravating. I find the hydraulic clutch lacking some feel too.

I'm not sure what you mean by "jittery", but the tranny does feel like it is mounted on jello... really moves around a lot.

If you are going to get a G35, I can't imagine NOT getting the 6-speed, but perhaps that's just me - it was one of the big reasons we bought the car. Some of the other cars we considered don't even have a manual trans option. The 6-speed may not be perfect, but I'd buy it so-equipped if I had to do it all over again.

Re: 6 speed manual transmission

Get the manual. You will regret the auto/manual trans. I own the manual, but have driven 850 miles on the G35 auto, and thought the auto shifting itself was very good for an auto, but the auto/manual mode is a complete waste (takes forever to upshift and was unpredictable on a few occasions -- I can shift a manual much faster). The best manual/auto trans I have driven is the BMW, and I still would never buy that. A sports car like this is meant to have a manual trans -- its just more fun to closely interact with the car, even if the trans has some small quirks.

Re: 6 speed manual transmission

what bothered me about the 6MT was that the interior looked cheaper in comparison to the 5AT. It doesn't appear as if the redesign was thought thru. Perhaps it won't bother the avid driver, but at this price point, I personally expect a bit more.

Re: 6 speed manual transmission

Well I have personally raced two 6MT's with my Auto in Manumatic and I won both times. All it takes is on mistake with that 6 MT and we are gone. Iam not saying that the Auto's are faster because I know a good stick will always beat a good Auto, but in this instance it was the other way around.
