Confussed about Sirius

I have a 05 6MT Sedan, with the Bose package, but no Navigation or Sat. My current head unit does not have a SAT button, and when I go thru the AM,FM1,FM2, CD ect, SAT is not a option that comes up. I would like to get Sirius, but my dealer wants $800 to install. My questions are

1. Is my car prewired for Sirius. (from what I have read, I think it should be)
2. If it is prewired, how do I get it to access the SAT on the head unit since it is not an option currently?
3. Is it better to go thru the factory way, or should I just get the aftermarket kit that mounts by the dash.

I have read the other threads, but they have generally confussed me.

Any Ideas would be great. I want to do it the way that gives it the best reception and looks the best. Thanks

I have the factory Sirius units in each of my G's. The coupe was prewired, but the sedan wasn't because it is older. Your '05 should be prewired and the wires should be in the trunk behind the cover that is on the back of the rear seat. It's a simple, white connector and it's easy to connect to the unit.

If you go the factory route, don't go to the dealer. Go to Grubbs' website and buy it there and download the install instructions. You'll save about $500.

The downside to the factory unit, besides costing twice as much as the portable Sirius units like the Sportster, is the limited display on the factory Bose unit. You can get the same information as on the portable units, but on my '03 and '04 units, the text doesn't scroll. You have to push the button to display artist and title.

The advantages of a portable unit are lower price, you can use it out of the car (less subscription costs for not having multiple units), better text display, better searching of songs with preview, and song/program alerts. The sound quality may not be as good (but it may be depending on your setup) with a portable unit through the FM modulator since the factory unit is hardwired.

If I were to do it over, I'd get a Sirius Starmate, 2 car mounts (one for each car) and a home kit. I'd spend less money than the $300 cost for the factory unit and have less subscription costs.

1. Yes
2. Once the reciever is installed, the radio button scrolls through the different inputs, sat1 and sat2 will be added to your rotation of am1,am2,fm1,fm2 and cd.

3. Depends, the factory display is completely craptastic, but it does have some benefits as Gilley pointed out. I didnt want the hassle of having another thing mounted in the car, so i opted for the factory reciever route.

BTW i recommend everythingG for the factory recvr, even though the price is a little higher than grubb, they include the antenna which i think is seperate on grubbs. They also emailed me the instructions immediately after the order, on the correct model as well, on an 06, which was very impressive considering the 06 was relatively new at the time.

Damn, my dealer did give me a deal, it was nowhere near that price, and yes, your '05 is definitely prewired! IMO, I'm glad I went with the factory set-up.

As the others have said, your 05 is prewired.

And don't get ripped off by your dealer.
$800 is a joke for the 1.5 hour (or less) install.

I talked them down to $400 but did so while I was
buying (well leasing) the car and before I signed
the contract.

Call around and then lie if you have too, tell your local dealer
that "so and so" dealer said they'd do it for $500 (or $450).
Tell them they have to beat that price to earn your business.

The dealer you BOUGHT and service the car from should be willing
to give you a great price to keep your business.
Tell them you'll take your business and any future recommendations
to it's competing dealer if that's the way they treat their customers and
are unwilling to give a reasonable price.

Great choice going with Sirius by the way.

Yes, there is a way to turn it on and off.
Honestly, my wife is the one who figured it out...it is her car.

Hold down display button, this cycles through the Channel - Artist - Title - Off (channel number only) Tap the display button to scroll through the text if it runs off the screen.

Wife figured this out for me as well

my dealer quoted 895 for the install... i laughed at him so hard, think it pissed him off. He wouldnt really move on the price, but even at 400 im not sure i would do it. I like a smooth roof, the reception is quite good on the rear package shelf for the antenna.

I put my antenna on the trunk at the edge next to the bottom of the rear window.

Buy a Delphi Roady2

FYI...

I have a 2003 G35 and instead of spending $500 or so (my G35 was not pre-wired for satellite), I purchased a Delphi Roady2 (for XM Satellite) for about $100 and hooked it up myself. Yes, you'll have a separate component that you have to velcro to the dash, but it works perfectly. Get the remote too...much easier to switch channels.

I just installed Sirius in my 05 6mt Sedan. Took less than 10 min. I just popped the seal around the cubby hole in the trunk, and remove the two snaps on the seatback. And pulled the cover out. got some doublesided tape and stuck the unit near the white connection at the bottom of the seat back and connected it. I then routed the attenna cable between the seat back and rear shelf down to the unit. Works like a charm.

Go to Grubbs and get the Sirius recv:

http://www.grubbsperformance.com/Mer..._Code=Specials

And the Micro Antenna:

http://www.grubbsperformance.com/Mer...Category_Code=

Then go to Circuit City and hand them $100 to install everything.

I did this and it cost like $360 (Dealer wanted $680).

When you buy from Grubbs, you even get the 3 months free as if you had it installed at the dealer.
