Hardest (emergency) braking experience
Hardest (emergency) braking experience
Just had my hardest braking experience in my 05 Sedan (stock, oem tires, 15k miles) tonight.
Coming down a hill closing in on a red light crosswalk, coasting at 55mph (50 zone), the light turns green but the truck that was stopped at the light in the left lane (I am in the right) hesitates to go though I do not see anything. Switched my foot to brake and saw something from the side of the truck, where my reaction was to brake hard (about 3-4 car lengths behind the truck). Squealed some, slid a few feet, where coming from a fairly steep down hill and doing about 50 did not help. Never have I slid in the G, but no back end unevenness or looseness. Stopped even behind where the front of the truck was by 2-3 ft so I was not too close to the crosswalk. Two people with a lot of dogs were running the red light, dont know why, but doing it on a downhill 50mph street was not smart.
Any others with experience and how did the G handle. In other cars I have had it would have been a lot closer (and uglier with uneven braking coming into play). I stopped faster than I had anticipated since I have never really tested this capacity.

Yes the G's brakes are one of the best in the industry. Good thing they are.
Welcome to G35Driver, btw...

I had a similar experience recently. I was coming down a hill going about 45-50 in the right lane and as the car in the left lane passed a cut in the median, all of a sudden I saw a car beginning to turn left in front of me, just moseying along. I was sure I was goig to T-bone him when I slammed on my brakes. I was amazed when the G stopped before hitting him. I was literally a couple of inches from the side of his car. I could see the eyes of the teenager in the passenger seat. I think he had just had a bowel movement.
It was only later that I figured out that the car in the left lane had blocked my view of the other car just long enough that it seemed like he came out of nowhere.

Can't wait to get better tires on it to see how it performs. Also getting d-specs installed this weekend so it should be interesting to see how the dynamcis change.

As others have said, good job. Sometimes it's best to trust your instincts. I tend to shadow the brake whenever I see a cross walk (especially at night) until my brain has had a chance to decide that it's actually clear. I get the feeling that other drivers wonder why I'm being careful and I think it annoys them. I'm just trying not to hurt someone, thats all.
Does anybody know how the brakes on the 03-04 sedans compare to the 05+ sedans? Are there any significant differences? I used to have a print out of the 04 specifications but I can't seem to find it.
I haven't had any emergancy braking experiences yet other than the odd harder than usual stop at a stop light. On a slightly snowy night I felt the ABS kick in which I've never experienced before (my first car). It felt rather odd but the car stopped.

First, well done. A good eye will save the paint everytime. Few things are as heart breaking as a dinged up G.
The ONLY hard braking experience I've had in the G came during my break-in period. Typical situation in Texas. I'm crusing down Rodd Field Road in Corpus Christi, and a Suburban with about 27 people in it pulls right out in front of me. They nail it (too late) and the two right lanes are filled with thick black smoke from the exhaust of the Suburban's highly tuned performance engine.... Not..
Once the smoke cleared and I was able to navigate again, I look to the left lane to cut around the now near-stationary three-ton piece of $hit blocking my lane, only to see another car sitting on my rear corner panel. I could've cut the guy off, but got into the brakes instead.
Mine was the opposite of a near miss. I ended up being a dork stopped about 25 feet shorter than I expected. I nailed the pedal and the car just freaking stopped. Coming out of a 1998 Maxima, I was prepared to do some creative curb launching to miss the idiot, but it was unnecessary.
As the left lane cleared I went around the Suburban and politely informed them that they were 'number one.' They responded with a pleasant toot from their 'speedy gonzalez' musical horn (duh-duh-duh-DAH-DAH!!), 36 waving hands from the 8 open windows, and that was the end of story.

As for stopping distances, they are comparable I guess. The 05s supposedly present less fade, but I've never tracked my car to be able to really tell. I've never experienced fade in my car (05), but I'm a pretty conservative driver.

I was taking my brand new 04 G35X for a break-in drive one clear afternoon with my then 2-yr old in the back. We were on a two-lane road that was posted 50 mph and I was just keeping up with traffic and specifically, the landscaping truck in front of me. I took my eyes off the road for a second, I can't even remember what the distraction was, and looked up to see the truck ahead stopped and me continuing at about 50 headed directly for the rear hitch. My reaction time isn't what it once was but in what seemed like slow motion, I slammed on the brakes, jerked the wheel right (dropping the right wheels into a loose gravel shoulder), and then steered around a mailbox that was crowding me on the right from the truck on the left.
I thought I might be going to the hospital or at least the junkyard. But the car handled the maneuver without drama and the ABS/Brake Assist/Stability Control/AWD systems worked brilliantly to bring the car rapidly to a stop with two wheels on the pavement and two wheels in the gravel. It was like there was nothing unusual. The space between the stopped truck (which I later realized was waiting for traffic in the opposite direction before making a left turn) and the mail box (one of those massively oversized boxes on a 4x4 post contructed of god knows what, iron? wood? it looked formidable) was tight, maybe a foot on either side. We made it through unscathed. I was shaking from the incident and to this day, I get shivers when I think of that truck looming up so fast in my windshield. I have no idea was distracted me so badly. Was I looking back at my son? Was I messing with the radio? I know I wasn't on the phone! But I was obviously following too closely and I very nearly paid fully for my stupidity. I was very lucky, that time.

The Brake assist is awesome.
I was following a Red Audi A4. He turned right, then stopped about 30 feet from the intersection because he wanted to turn left across oncoming traffic. The road was three lanes wide and he had his own turn lane, but he didn't realize it since the road was poorly marked and under construction.
I didn't realize that he had stopped in my lane, not the turning lane until I had already completed my right turn and was accelerating to merge with traffic. When I saw him, I slammed on my brakes and the car stopped faster than I ever imagined it could. It just stopped! Like there was a anchor line that finally ran its length. I stopped with plenty of room. Infiniti did a great job.

i must say between the 6MT and brakes my g stops on a dime. the one thing i had a problem with was braking when going faster than 100mph everything seems to shake. its only noticeable when going these speeds whether the brake is pressed hard or soft and has happened since i first got my g...i guess this is where drilled/slotted rotors and better padding come in handy
i had a chick in a mustang pull out of a taco cabana... she made a left turn.. and i was going straight... this was 2nd week of ownership... i just took off to college and nearly wrecked my g35... but i didnt... i only had about 150 miles on it.. its an 2006 G35.. well i braked so hard and turned because i had too to avoid her... the G35 is awesome when it comes to instant braking or acceleration... even handling since i have the sport package.
its a sweet ride... i only have 4500 miles on it...

Just to add a side note. I put Firestone Wide Ovals on (and in a 235 width) and the braking is noticeably better than with the stock RSAs. Eeked out more performance than I imagined it would.
Anyways, I have trouble driving other (older Honda, Toyotas) cars since I am so use to braking later now. Feels like I am trying to stop a bus when they are just regular cars.
