Manumatic question. Did not function

I was driving (normally I might add). And decided to play with the manumatic mode. But when I did, the display didn't show "4" like normal. Stayed in "D". And moving the shifter up/down did nothing. Happend the entire time I was driving. Even when stopped at a light. 1 hour later (after turning off/on the car I suspect), the manumatic mode returned to normal.

Normal? Explaination that's well known?

Sounds like an electronic blip.

If no ill effects remain, I wouldn't sweat it. If all is well and it hasn't repeated itself, no problem.

I've had no problems with manual mode, although I get a hard (read firm) shift from 2-3 every now and then - only when I'm flogging it.

Is there a reason taht when your cruising in 5th and knock it over to manu, that it downshifts to fourth... i've never understood that

it will always be in the fourth gear when you switch to mm mode. thats the default gear to start from. Althought what i wanted was, when i start to car and put it in the mm, i wanted the gear to be one instead of four.

If you are at a standstill and you switch to MM, the tranny will go into 1st. But the display will show 4. Actually the tranny will go into 1st either way. But in MM, it won't every shift into 5th (overdrive)

I like the fact that if you switch to MM, it goes into 4th (ie.. on the freeway). It saves me time to do something I'd already do anyway.

The tranny is in "1st" or the the display shows "1"? I have a 2003 auto. I can make it show "1" but I'll have to downshift 3 times and it won't go out of 1st until I tell it to

For 2002-2004, the autos in the sedans and coupes differed. The manumatic was functionally a top gear selector, you select the gear you want and the auto will go to that gear and stop shifting. For 2004.5 and beyond, the sedans received the same manumatic software as the coupe and functionally, it was a true manual mode automatic, whatever gear the display read was the gear you were in.

The 2005/06 Automatic transmission behaves differently from the 2003/04s due to a different software algorithm.

In my car (a 2005), when I shift to MM, the transmission can shift DOWN automatically, but will not shift up. For example, when in "D" it will shift down to 1 when I roll to a stop. However, if I were to stomp on the gas, the car would approach redline, and remain in 1st gear until I popped it up to 2nd. When in 5th gear, it will shift down, but will prevent you from downshifting to an unsafe gear (for example you can't shift down from 5th to 1st while at 80mph).

Does that clarify things? it works much more like an sequential-manual gearbox than the 2003/04's.

Thanks but IMHO it's a display diff. As far as I know, if I to MM at a light, the display will show "4". But the tranny will actually (I assume) go into 1st gear. Then it will automatically shift until it reaches 4th, where it will stay until I shift up. It will act like a normal 4 sp auto vs 5 sp auto.

Looks like the 04+ autos will auto shift down into 1st at a light (MM mode) and stay there until told to shift up. Cool. What happens if you are going let's say 40mph and shift into MM?

Can this program be flashed into the older models?

Its not just a different display. Its an entirely different ECU and its not compatible with the new models. In the 04+ models, if you hit upshift before its ready to shift, it won't do anything. The display won't go up...just stay in the gear. As someone stated early, a true sequential gear shift rather than a top gear selector.

This isn't a different display. Its a fundamentally different logic for the transmission. Re-read what I said.
