Re: Neglecting your G?

I've got a close friend who NEVER washes his car. Usually has very nice cars as well. Last one was a V70R; got detailed once in his three year lease; the day before the lease was up. Never has dings or dents fixed either. Just waits for the charges by the leasing company. His current car is an S6. At three weeks old, a garage attendant scraped a fender flare real bad. Even when he had the chance to get someone else to pay for the repair (probably $1k), my friend let it go. The S6 is now a year old, has never been washed, and has a rear quarter that's starting to rust. SAD! Even with Audi's free maintenance, I wonder if the oil ever gets changed. The problem is, that when this car goes back to the dealer at the end of the lease, even after the cosmetics are fixed, some poor unsuspecting buyer will get a car that has had zero maintenance.

Some people just don't give a crap about car maintenence, and nothing will change them. It's what happens when you grow up in a family where there was always a chauffeur to clean the family car. I'm convinced this is all in the upbringing. By contrast, my ten year old already knows how to detail a car, (even has a special stand so he can reach the roof.)

Re: Neglecting your G?

Wow. That's pathetic... I don't think I could ever do that to a car.

I think it's more that some people think that cars are just "tools" like computers or bikes. It's just a bucket of bolts to get you from point A to point B in semi-comfort. I'd think people who grew up with car-washing chauffers would take at least some pride in their cars and have them washed every once in a while... when we lived in Brazil, we had to have a chauffeur; if you're an American driving through downtown Sao Paulo, you're a target. It helps if there are windows tinted hardcore in the back, and you can't really do that in the front. We had two chaufferus shot in that city... so yeah... Regardless, I would help them wash the cars because I loved em.(BTW- an Escort is a luxury automobile in Alfa Ville, at the time only two types of cars were imported to the country)

I guess some people are born with a sense of pride and like to take care of things they care abut and have spent a lot of time/money earning, and some just don't get it. My friend told me I was "unhealthy and obsessed" about my car. I just told him once he drove something other than a mid-80s Chevy Celebrity or a 92 Saturn, maybe he'd understand that cars can be artful pieces of engineering, not just tin cans (Or in the Saturn's case, plastic cans) that get you from one point to another.

Funny post...
Thought I was the only nut out there that only handwashes his car and waxes it once a month...

I put alot of effort in making sure my G is as clean as possible. My wife new a detailer and got some of that pink stuff they use a dealerships that give it that "showroom shine" and I use it everytime I was my car. It leave a protective film on it and helps with the shine.

Guess that's the difference between ppl that LOVE their G and those that Like it.

So what you clean it frequently, after a few years all look the same, it is just a car. May be the guy has ten cars and he doesn't even care what this G look like.

I beg to differ... there's a noticable difference between cars that have been meticulously cared for and those that are treated with the "it's just a car" philosophy. I have personally taken care of my cars to the best of my ability, and they look much better much longer than my sister's cars, which are not often washed/cared for. The paint starts to look faded and worn, and the chips and dings are painfully evident. To each his own, but I like to keep mine looking newer longer. Doesn't hurt resale value either.

Re: Neglecting your G?

First off: 30k to some people is nothing. Like one post said they may own 10 cars and this is their cheap set of commuter wheels. I'm not rich, but live in a very wealthy area where this is the case.

We are all car enthusiasts here or we wouldn't be going back and forth on this sight. I have taken car of my cars pretty well (not **** about it), and have found when i trade in my car people are impressed and i get good cash for the vehicle.

We drive a pretty damn nice car. But almost all of us would admit if we had much bigger wallets, we wouldn't be driving this vehicle.

Re: Neglecting your G?

In CA, there are so many people who own more than one car.
Maybe that guy with the "neglected g" uses it as a commuter car? I was also thinking, maybe it's a company car where everyone gets to drive it and no one gives a damn? Possilble?
Again, there are people who really just don't have a passion for their cars like we do. Not that we're better than them or anything but they just don't care. Look around you. People every day at home on the road at work, just don't care about anything. If you have something nice, they get jealous. I tend to wash my car every Friday or Saturday mornings. It's a routine. Unless of course the "FOG" rolls in then forget it.
I sometimes feel like telling the people who don't care for their nice cars...."PLEASE" bring it to my house...let me "detail" your car for you! My first job was being a "valet" at SF BMW. I was taught by their master detailer the proper way to care and detail your car and began detailing cars on the side when I was 18 for about $100.00 per car. But oh well some people will never learn and the guy whose wheels are all black, just needs to be educated!

yeah now that i think about it... what if that crapped up G is a commuter/company car. my friend's father uses lexuses as company cars and when i see him driving one, it's not in the best of shape (he drives a black ES and it just looks dusty). but then again, it's not as awful as that G.

Re: Neglecting your G?

Well, you made me feel guilty about my dusty front wheels.
So yesterday after work I washed JUST the wheels. It's been
raining around Houston for the past few days, weeks..
so no point in washing the car.
