DaveO,
Thanks

Re: Synthetic oil vs. Regular oil
Hi, chinee. I spoke today with my contact, a ChevronTexaco motor lubes specialist. Due to proprietary and legal reasons he would not reveal a specific finished product. What he did say is that ChevronTexaco tests its lube technologies and formulations far in excess of engine manufacturer's OEM requirements.
The G35 Owner's Manual, states "Only those engine oils with the American Petroleum Institute (API) certification mark on the front of the container should be used. . . . If you cannot find engine oil with the API certification mark, use an API grade SG/SH, Energy Conserving I & II or API grade SJ or SL, Energy conserving oil. . . ."
Because of my driving habits I can apply the Schedule 2 change interval of 7,500 miles. Also, the ambient temperature in my area seldom drops below 32F (0C). Thus, I plan to use ChevronTexaco's Supreme 10W-30 (which meets API SL, Energy Conserving for API SL, and ILSAC GF-3) at 7,500 mile change intervals.

Re: Synthetic oil vs. Regular oil
Is that the stock air tube on the GN. That sure is a different compartment than the 1982 regal 3.8 I had. That car sucked but was a great ride for a few years in college. Great interior for a used old car..i had the royal blue with the cushion top upholstery and the radio stuck on one station for 3 of 4 years. My bud with the GN has a 96 vette with mods and it will never come close to GN times.
How does the GN run at high speed - is it rigid and solid to handle??

Re: Synthetic oil vs. Regular oil
Thanks Dan... I'm going to try running my ODI to 10K with the Mobil1. If that works...that'll be my interval for the next year or two. I just viewed some pics of a 1995 Camry V6 engineat 110K miles that has run M1 since 3K... engine looks very clean... see here for pics:

Now he changed every 3-5K, more often than I plan to, but 110K with no varnish... that's great performance!

Re: Synthetic oil vs. Regular oil
Sorry to moderator that this got a little off topic...
Everything you see is stock configuration except for stock pieces that were chromed. The 3.8 received a MAJOR revamp in 86 and 87 when the turbo was moved to the front and the intercooler was added. The car has constant acceleration and is stable until the limiter kicks in at 126 MPH. This limit was set because of factory delivered tires and aerodynamics. Of course I have seen them run in the area of 200 mph at the track! Mine is stock so it runs high 13s at about 102 in the 1/4 with A/C and loaded with options.

Re: Synthetic oil vs. Regular oil
Chinee, yes, the engine in the pics appears to be very clean. It reminds me of my various Audi and VW motors after 80,000 to 115,000 miles on conventional oils. Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that conventional oils are as good as synthetic. I'm only saying that conventional oils are completely adequate for street motors. I find it hard to justify the five to ten times cost premium for synthetics.
Recently, the machine shop at work received a diesel truck transmission (Kenworth or Peterbuilt) to clean for display purposes. This transmission went 500,000 miles on the original oil fill and showed essentially no wear. I don't know if the oil was conventional or synthetic. But, 500,000 miles on the original fill is pretty good going.

Re: Synthetic oil vs. Regular oil
Dan...this is not good... you're raising doubts in my mind as to whether I should continue with synth or not.
However since the advantage I'm looking for is a longer oil drain interval (just for convenience) I think I'll stick with the M1. If I was only driving 15-18K/yr on each vehicle though, I would switch back to dino... the top three (based on feedback I've read) being Chevron Supreme, Pennzoil and GTX, not necessarily in that order.
Time for me to get a life!

Re: Synthetic oil vs. Regular oil
Yes, I used to spend hours worrying about which oil to use. I settled on the manufacturers' recommendations. My wife's BMW uses BMW synthetic, their version of Syntec, which is the recommended oil. My G35 has a fill of BMW synthetic because I bought a case at $3.80/qt from the local BMW dealer and I thought I'd try it in the G. I also have a case of Chevron Supreme for my son's Passat. When the G35 need an oil change I'll use the Supreme.
