Synthetic oil vs. Regular oil
Re: Synthetic oil vs. Regular oil
If you only drive your car 6,000 miles per year, then time will be your enemy. Odd as it may seem, short trips and lack of use can cause more problems in a car than heavy use. You may want to follow Schedule 1 in the maintanence manual, which you'll note requires an oil change every 3,750 miles or every 3 months, whichever comes first. The rest of the maintanence schedule has months associated with the intervals as well as mileage. The manual has a list of criteria in it to decide whether to use Schedule 1 or 2. Even if you go with 2, don't go far past the month timelines just because you haven't accumulated the mileage.
Note that some synthetics, such as Amsoil (I'm not sure about Mobil1 -- didn't read the whole bottle before throwing it away), allow you to go up to a full year before needing to be changed (time-wise). Otherwise, you'll be changing your oil every 3-6 months, depending on the service schedule. From a cost standpoint, regular oil will still be cheaper. From a be-good-to-your-engine standpoint, I don't think you're running it hard enough to worry about, either way.

Re: Synthetic oil vs. Regular oil
Great point! I had a Mitsu that had cold weather start noise; just a trait of the engine, and I switched to a 50/50 mix of synthetic and dino and the noise practically went away. Using it on my new Mivec engine now. How can people be concerned about spending extra money on oil anyhow? Blows my mind......or are they so cheap that when they walk they squeak ?
