What RPM do you shift at

What RPM's does everyone with the 6 shift at, and how does the shifting feel from gear to gear?

Re: What RPM do you shift at

Shifting is smooth in all gears. If I get on it, I sometimes hit the rev limiter in first (just over red line) . If I have the space I usually shift at 6000 but by the time I hit 4th , (under normal conditions) I'm up on traffic so 5th and 6th becomes just an over drive. At the same time I can even turn a corner in 5th and pull away with no hesitation.

Monster: 4250 RPM on the way up, when I'm not in a hurry. 6000 when I am. Either way it's quite a ride

Good grief. Do you pull the shifter hard or slow through the gears?

Re: What RPM do you shift at

from 1st to 2nd, i shift at about 2-3. 2nd to 3rd at about 3, 3rd and higher ill shift at 3-4. thats all on local roads. on the highway, its redline simply cause i can =).

my 1st to 2nd to 3rd shifts are usually smooth if im cruising. but when in a bit of a hurry, they get really screwy as if im shifting too fast. anyone else get that? its hard to get it to shift in just the right rpm drop, which for me is about 500 rpm.

6600-6800 whenever I want.

quicker shifts are better, as RPM's drop quickly.

It is real fun to sit at 80 mph in 4th gear (about 4500 rpms) and just nail it (3rd gear at 70 mph is a bit better)

this engine is made to rev, and you should.

gotta love it.

I agree about the trans being fantastic. M prior car was a civic so this is fantastic anyway. 2nd gear snap is my fav at about 3500 rpm. Fifth is really nice to. I get into fifth and am doing 1500 RPM and can really feel the torque pulling effortlessly along with the little rumble from the exhaust.

Re: What RPM do you shift at

I guess because I do a lot of driving on surface streets in rush hour traffic, I don't get to redline the engine very often. Typically in the lower gears I shift at 3500 rpm. Sometimes when I'm getting on the freeway I'd go as high as 5500 rpm. Shifting is generally smooth but for some reason occasionally I have trouble putting the shifter from 5th to 6th gear.

Re: What RPM do you shift at

All depends. If the car is cold and right out of the garage, I don't shift above 3000 until the engine is warmed up.

I like to shift smoothly and quickly. If I really want to pull out fast in traffic, I shift at 4500 in 1st and 2nd and 3500 in 3rd and 4th. I drive in the city most of the time, so don't have occasion to get into 5th or 6th. If I'm on a road track, I shift at higher revs--and in 4th hit the rev limiter at about 6900-7000.

Re: What RPM do you shift at

I sometimes have a problem with reverse! (you really need to push down) wish something lite up to verify when reverse was engaged. I sometimes ease of the clutch and edge forward meaning I starting out in 6th and it does not stall!!

Talk about contrast...when I go from the 6MT to driving my 70 big block with its 33 year old hurst 4 speed, its like learning to drive a stick all over again. But with 510 lbs of torque on hand , its a blast. There is nothing like cubic inches (and I use all 455 of them).

Re: What RPM do you shift at

I suspect your traction control is causing this. Turn it off and see if you notice the difference. I turn mine off as long as the road is dry. This way I control the car and not the computer :-).

Re: What RPM do you shift at

smcallis is definitely right. Shifting the G can be smooth as silk when you finesse all those elements the right way.
I've noticed that driving different manual cars takes some adjustment on the part of the driver because clutches and where they engage feels different. My boyfriend often has to adjust his shifting style when going from his 5-speed BMW M Roadster to my 6-spd G to make it smooth (and vice versa for me). His reverse is also in the opposite corner from mine, so we always have fun with that when driving each other's car.

As far as reverse goes, I just make sure I have depressed the stickshift before moving it over into the gate--at first it took me a little while to get the feel of that, but now it's no problem and I know right away if I'm "in" the groove for reverse or not .
