Krazed drunk driver

So yesterday, around 9:30PM, I was driving home with my gf from picking up some food and icecream. While slowing down for an approaching stop sign, I see a white pick-up truck fly from my left to right at the intersection without even stopping, much less slow down. "What a $hithead" I said to my gf. Next thing I know, the guy does a freaking right turn RIGHT TOWARDS MY CAR! I quickly swerve to the right into where the parked cars were. Just as I did that, he missed me by a few feet and ended up hitting a parked civic. I was like "Holy $hit, he just hit that car". The guy stopped for a brief second and then took off. The whole side of that civic was torn up! In that brief second I thought to myself, if this guy doesn't get busted, he might do more damage or kill someone. So I pulled a U-Turn and called 911 and followed the guy. He flew through 2 stop signs and then drove over a curb, turns into a development and parks there. I give a descrip of the car, license plate, and the guy to 911. After that, I went to find the owner of the civic to tell her what had happened and they were really grateful.

When I told my friends this, they called me stupid for even getting involved b/c it could put me at risk. Especially these days where everyone carries a gun. I have no regrets for what I did. I thought to myself, if I were to do nothing, and that guy kept driving around hitting cars, what if he killed someone that I knew...how could I live with myself. Iono, I just needed to vent...I feel so conflicted if I came across that situation again, if I would get involved.

You did the right thing. We can't keep ourselves from helping others. If that was your car that was hit, you would have liked someone to have taken the idiots info. So, you did the right thing. Hopefully that person you helped, will also "pay it forward!"

You absolutely did the right thing.....I'm guessing you weren't able to make out the license plate as he hit the Civic?.... as a high speed chase after a drunk guy (not that that's what you did) would be kinda messed up, if that did happen

You did the right thing bro...it's not like you were attempting to ram him with your car, or pull him out of his car and beat him senseless for driving drunk.

Following him from a safe distance and reporting him to 911 was the right thing to do...The sonofabetch couldn't even drive straight, if he pulled a gun I doubt he'd be able to hit you from his moving car while you are moving as well.

Don't sweat it man.

Absolute right thing to do and I'm sure owner of the civic was grateful for your act of kindness. I hope the guy in the truck was found and caught.

Thanks for the support guys, totally opposite of what everyone else has been telling me. I wasn't able to make out the plate as he hit the civic and thats why I tailed him from a distance and while stopping at all stop signs and not speeding like crazy. I love my car too much to jeopardize it's well-being It was a good thing he didn't get too far (maybe three blocks) before he pulled over. It took forever for a single patrol car to show up, I'll say like 15 minutes before I flagged one down and pointed out where the car was parked. The owner of the civic was grateful. I just hope someone would do the same for me if they saw my car being hit. Speaking of which, someone scratched off a bunch of paint off my door a few weeks ago while I was parked at Compusa. I'm still figuring out if I want to repair it or just use touch up paint

You did the right thing - like you said, he could have injured or killed somebody and then you would have to deal with the guilt of knowing you coyld have stopped it. The attitude of 'not getting involved' is why many criminals continue doing what they do. It sounds like that driver was a complete a$$ that would have eventually killed or maimed somebody, delibaretely running stop signs - people like that should be shot, a waste of the planet's resources...

Good work. You kept you and your passenger safe and helped stopped someone doing a very dangerous thing. Thank you for quick and safe thinking.

What's with these people that think you should just ignore something like that? You are right in that this drunka@@ could of hurt someone. You handled the situation perfectly IMO. Tell your friends to stop thinking of themselves and think of others once in a while.

+ 1 for doing the right thing. I've done the same thing before. Being a firefighter and seeing the mess that drunk drivers cause and the lives they destroy, most of the time never even injuring themselves, is enough to make you sick. I must admit, in my younger days, I know I've driven when I shouldn't have, but never running off the road and hitting cars. I can tell you though, that after being a firefighter for years and cleaning those messes up, will surely make you think differently about drinking and driving. You most definitely did the right thing. Always make sure you and your passenger are safe first, but there is nothing wrong with calling 911 and following from a safe distance. Good job. The unfortunate thing is that do to the fact that this person made it home and out of the car before the police arrived, most likely will mean that nothing will come of it. Sad.
