Hard wireing a radar detector
Well i just ordered a Valentine-1 radar detector and what i would like to know is how those that have hard wired theirs have gone about it, reason for purchase is i just got my first radar ticket 81 in a 55 mph speed zone on the back roads out of Hollister CA, and to top it it the CHP did not give me a break on the speed, oh well a hard expensive lesson learned. Thanks again for any input.

Actually, I spliced the radar detector wires into the wires behind the rear-view mirror. Real easy, 10 minute job. Careful tho, I blew my alternator fuse doing it because the ground wire was opposite what I thought... It was the red wire vice the black, and the alternator fuse wasn't labeled in the fuse panel.

Someone sells the hardwire if you have homelink. It's so cheap, it's not worth the hassle of making your own. I have one, great service.

my way
After popping a fuse trying to hard wire my Valentine one, i want to save you the trouble. (the fuse will be labeled battery in the driver side fuse compartment if such an event were to happen)
Like the other posters, i think the piggy back V1 thing-er is too bulky to hard wire into the homelink. So what i did was cut the long straight rj12 cord to around 8 inches, stripped the tiny little wires and spliced into the home link. Very easy and very stealth. Which wires connect to which wires you ask, OK here it is:
Red RJ12 (Positive) - Black/Pink Homelink (ignition dependant positive)
Green RJ12 (Negative) - Black Homelink (Negative)
Use your favorite splice method and a little electrical tape, install your V1 just at the top left of your mirror and now its time for some irresponsible speeds.

Buy Invisicord or make one like I did....
All you need are these (http://shop4.outpost.com/product/205...:MAIN_RSLT_PG). I bought it at our local fry's (Fry's = Outpost.com.
Get any phone cord. Black if possible if you have it so it matches, but any color you want. And cut to your desired length. 6-8 inches is more than enough.
Strip (1/4 inch) the red and green lines (http://www.answers.com/topic/rj-11). If your phone cord doesnt have colored lines, just make sure you track the color done the line to the correct wire. It doesn't matter too much because its always the middle 2 and even if you connect the wrong color to the back of the homelink, it just wont work and then switch them.
Connect the connectors to the end of the lines and crimp. Use some shrink cord to clean it up. Last but most important, flatten the end of the male connector so that it will slide into the slots of the homelink. If you leave it round, it will be a very tight fit. See for connection matches ( http://www.invisicord.com/docs/quickconnect.pdf).
For Infiniti: Red to Black/Pink; Green to Black.
The red phone wire = yellow inviscord = black/pink homelink slot. The green phone wire = black invisicord = black homelink slot.
That's it. Should take you 10-30 mins to create the wire depending on your skills and 10 secs to connect to back.
