I've read that there are some ppl that like to do their own maintenance because its cheaper and its the dealer really doesn't do anything special other then charge you 3x the actual cost. I was thinking of doing my own maintenance since I had a bad experience bringing my own car in once...
question -- does this hurt your warrenty at all, is it worth taking a chance on doing these things yourself especially if your a noobie machanic. Lastly, since I bring it in for an oil change (drive less than 3k / 3 mo.), will they say anthing, like , "You need to schedule a checkup...blah blah blah " to the point you feel pressured to do that? (Sounds stupid, but just wondering)

Just keep your records and you should be fine. The oness is on them to prove you voided the warranty by doing (or not doing) something.
Just educate yourself before going in and f'ing something up. Most basic maintenance is very simple and if you're in the least bit mechanically inclined you'll do fine.
Lastly if you do take it in for these "Scheduled checkups" they are mostly BS. I always chuckle at the "lube the chassis" advertisement. Many cars now dont even have grease zerks. Point is most of it is BS. And they soak you big time in the process. Scheduled checkups are really just scheduled revenue generators for the shops. All I can say is the more you educate yourself the less chance they will have to screw you. I don't take my cars in unless I absolutely have to. They either screw you or they're hacks that dont do the work the way you want it done.

If you do take it in, make sure you compare the services they plan to perform against the services required in your owner's manual. Dealerships often pad the work order with extra services that aren't really necessary.

Two really necessary maintenence items you will rarely see in owners manuals, or the dealer's padded list of BS maintenence:
Changing the brake fluid and radiator fluid.
The brake fluid should really be changed yearly, but every two years at the outside. If you plan on keeping your car for more than a few years, this will save you money in the long run by helping to keep your callipers in good shape. Brake fluid is hygroscopic, (absorbs moisture) and detiorates with time. It becomes more compressable, and more likely to overheat (causing brake fade), as it absorbs moisture. If you plan on taking your car to the track, make sure your brake fluid is no more than 12 mos. old.
Radiator fluid should be flushed every two years.

After 60,000 miles (96,000 km) or 48 months, replace every 30,000 miles (48,000 km) or 24 months.
On the brakes, though, the closest thing is to inspect the brake lines every 15k mi or 12 mo.
In practice, I've had a Jeep dealership recommend both services to me at various times.
