Re: Dilema: auto or 6 speed

Hi DaveB,

it basically comes down to your preference. If you are on a tight budget and auto will save you more money, then go for AT one. If not, 6 speed is your car, not to mention better gas milage. I was going for a 6 speed for my 04 G; however, my wife does not drive a stick so I have to go back to auto. My friend who switched over from Audi A4 and bought the 6-speed G absolutely loves his G for its distinct shifting manner, much easier to shift when you get a hang of it, simply effortless.

I have seen the other posts Dave, Try them both. Either way, know that you are getting a great machine. I have 14K on a 2003.5 6MT Sedan and it is a fine piece of equipment. I have driven friends auto's, and they are good, just not for me. Send up some pictures when you get it.

I love apples and coffee...both of which would be nearly impossible to drink and eat without making a mess while on the phone with a 6mt.

The 6 is great I have driven many, but the 5 is definitly underated once you learn the system...when I say learn I mean around 5K miles...not just using a loaner for a day.

Vids: I drive. You eat and talk on the phone. I think that's where we went astray. When I plan on turning my $35,000.00 car into a lunch counter, the auto looks good. The 6MT can be driven reasonably well with a cup of Coffee. Everything else just flies around the car, so now I do my eating at home, calling from work and driving in the car.

Haven't you heard of the California Driver's Test?

You have to be able to drink coffee, read the paper, eat a donut, and talk on the phone while driving a stick shift during rush hour.

as part of the driving test, i would add shave (electric) and tie your tie.

a friend i used to drive to work used to crack up as i would drive my manual car, tie my tie, shave, etc.... and all the while, make good time.

Re: Dilema: auto or 6 speed

I agree with htbomb. This is my first auto... and I know the stick would be a lot of fun when I am not stuck in traffic. However, I am glad for the auto when I am in heavy traffic on my work commute.

The auto is not bad at all and I use the manumatic all the time. The only real downside is that it will not upshift on command. The latter gets to be a pain when I want to be in 2'nd to make a fast left etc. - if the tranny is in 1'st, it can (and does) upshift in the middle of the corner - and there goes the tail swinging out. Will let you know if I find a way

Hmmmmm...I don't think my car upshifts when in manual unless it's already set to a higher gear, i.e. if the indicator on the dash indicates I'm in first the car won't upshift to second til a bump the stick.

Re: Dilema: auto or 6 speed

I owned manual-shift cars exclusively for over 25 years, and loved every minute. Then I moved to Memphis, where the bumper-to-bumper traffic is terrible. When it came time to get a new car, I chose the G35 5AT. It was either that, or my clutch pedal foot was going to have to come off! If I ever move again, I'm looking for wide-open spaces and a 6MT for sure.

Don't forget putting your shoes and socks on. One of my best friends had an '88 Toyota Corolla 5 speed and would do this on the way to high school when running late. Not like he was good at it though...
