Question Does the new 2007 G35 HD player (musicbox) play mp4 aka m4a i.e. aac encoded files ?

Folks, the new 2007 G35 HD player (musicbox) supports playing MP3 music files, however does anybody know if the new 2007 G35 HD player can play mp4 aka m4a i.e. aac encoded music files ? I'm about to extract my CD collection & I prefer mp4 for its higher sound quality at low-medium bit rates i.e. smaller file size.

After conducting online research & performing numerous track tests on my medium end consumer home audio equipment (Yamaha amp & JBL ND310 speakers), I've come to the following conclusion for files extracted from CDs only (could be different if directly extracting from a digital studio master):

1. 128k mp4 == 192k mp3
2. 160k mp4 == 224k mp3 (better than 1. & very difficlut to distinguish from the original track on a CD)

mp4 seemed to have lost its quality/size advantage at bitrates above 160k. Also concluded that 192k mp4 & 256k mp3 were not audibly distinguishable from 160k mp4 & 224k mp3, while, 320k mp4 & mp3 may have been marginally better & that was rare & very hard to detect (and only in certian sections of certain tracks).

Thus I'd like to go with 160k mp4 instead of 224k mp3 if I can, for the 30% smaller file for equivalent quality.

PS. Don't want this debate to be about audio quality of mp4 vs mp3, just want to know if G35 HD player can play mp4 otherwise I'll extract mp3 files at 224k . Also want to know if there's an easy solution to play mp4 files in G35 HD player (assuming it does not).

Foot Note: See attached picture from infiniti's website for info about the "musicbox".

Typically if the supporting OS can recognize MP3, it will also support MP4 - but this in regards to audio only and not video. Unfortunately I have not seen what file Formats will be supported - but I imagine that several will be.

I'm a software engineer....your assertion is false, one needs a mp4 audio (aac) decoder; mp4-audio has advanced encoding algorithm for added compression to deliver better quality at lower bitrates. Also mp4-audio files are not backward compatible with mp3 players (unlike mp3 which played in mp2 & mp1 players) - this was purposely broken to get smaller file size & smiplify the decoding requirements.

Good for you - but perhaps before you make accusations you may want to re-read my statement. As I said, [typically] - in regards to current product offerings - that if the supporting OS can decode MP3, it also has the CODEC to playback MP4. This was an observation of what is currently available today in the market place, and not a technical statement.

I also never said a MP3 CODEC was compatible w/a MP4 CODEC - you make that leap-of-faith yourself.
