Active Steer (4WAS) - any facts?

Hi all,

I have read many of the reviews about the 07 G35 and it seems the only cars that were reviewed that had active steering were pre-production models. One of the reviews suggested that they were unsure whether the improved steering was attributed to the active steering system or the stiffer suspension parts that came with active steer. Another review speculated that the sport model received the same springs that came with the pre-prod active steer model. Edmunds even went as far to say the the suspension with active steer would be too stiff. As if that is possible.

Does anyone have concrete information regarding active steer on the 07 G35? I think I would much rather have this option instead of the Tech Package, IF it improved the handling performance.

Another interesting tidbit is that when I used the "build your infiniti" wizard on the main website, Active steer was not even an available option. What gives?

Strange that Infiniti.com doesn't have 4WAS up on their site. The Canadian website has it.

FWIW....
I haven't driven the Infiniti system, but....
I tested the BMW system on back to back solo test drives.

JMO, but In the Bimmer it ruined the steering.
It lost the solid linear feel & feedback.

Make sure you test it b4 you decide!!!!

Yeah, I don't see it anywhere on the main site. I went to "features & specifications" and I don't see it there either. Weeeeird.

That is the problem. It is very likely that you won't find any cars on the lot with the Active Steer option. Will more than likely be an order only, test drive it after you buy it.

Maybe a dealer type can chime in....

BMW's Active Steering isn't four-wheel BTW, at least on the 3-series. Most Bimmer enthusiasts don't like it for the reasons you described and won't order it.

Yep, when I did the ultimate drive, all the e90 330's had it, and I thought that's why they performed so well (they provided 2k6 G35's and A4 3.2 Q for comparison, and obviously the road course was stacked in the 3's favor). I assumed that I needed it, and lucky none of the test 335's had it, and the e92 forum was very against it. I feel like it saved me from a $1200 mistake.

The worst thing is to shell out a lot of money for something that either doesn't help, or makes things worse. I'd definitely bypass this option on the Infiniti too. Don't need to try it, the car needs to perform well without it. If not, I'd bypass the car altogether!

Manufacturers feel a need to keep pushing technolgy further and seeing what may work in the marketplace plus a cutting edge feature that helps their marketing and image. 4WS has been around for many years- I remember the 300 , the Prelude and probably all kind of others. No one has seemed to make this system work well enough at least to capture the masses.

With the G35, it's big on value, reliability.....I wouldn't add options/features that take away from it. The beauty of this car, if you ask me, is what's under the body...motor, drivetrain, the underpinnings. Some of the other stuff is fluff. That's why I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with the new Z and G35 coupe. My gut is the new coupes might offer some scary performance, with the return of the Supra....

I hope you're right on the coupe. I'm not so confident about that though.

No, 4WAS is a $1500 option. It is only available with the Sport versions of the G35.

The Sport version is not available with all wheel drive.

What I want to know is if anyone; dealer, customer, or reviewer, has tested a production version of the 4WAS and if the other suspension parts are different than the standard sport suspension.
