I would say 16 mpg with an AWD isn't the end of the world, but the fact that the mileage was obtained on all hwy driving is puzzling. At any rate, I wouldn't conclude anything until the car had at least 1500-2000 miles on it, or the km equivalent.

Don't fret about your new car. After the car is broken in the economy will be better plus you likely won't be regularly driving 90mph in your fuel economy test.

These cars aren't fuel misers but aren't fuel hogs either.

I got actual 19 mpg on my first tankful, normal commuting (12 miles on limited access highway). The mileage calculation via the trip meter was low btw until the tank was down a good bit.

Will get less now that I have a few miles on it and am exploring performance, and the weather is getting colder, but have a road trip coming up and will see what can really be expected. Fully agree about performance getting better with 2k miles, but my 02.5 usually got about 19 in the city and 26 or so when behaving on trips. Not an economy car, but never pretended to be.

This is one reason I haven't given up on the TL Type-S 6M I tested last week.

Your mileage will improve for sure. You gave the answer for your poor mileage above . Checking out the acceleration swell . During break-in you are constantly changing speed and varying RPMs to give a proper break-in. Also it's new and you can't help but give it a shot to test this new found power.
It will get better.

TL is SUCH a different car...I don't think you should have a problem choosing between the two, when it comes down to it,you either want an apple or an orange.

Wow, thanks for all your input.

I just want to stress that I don't normally go at 140km/h but yesterday's traffic conditions allowed some more spirited driving.

My daily 15km commute to work in medium to heavy city traffic won't help, but I should report again when I next fill up.

On the trip I used the cruise control at times, but usually varying speeds but pushing up to 140km/h then back to 130 or 120.

Of course, when I go to work tomorrow morning my speeds would vary from 80km/h or so (if I am lucky) to 0km/h (which is OFTEN).

Would you care to elaborate? On paper, they're competitors and roughly comparable other than FWD/RWD. I've driven each only once and didn't push them. The TL-S was a manual and G35 was an automatic, which made a comparison hard (a stick is always more fun). They both seem to have decent luxury and sportiness (unlike the ES 350 which truly is a different kind of car/fruit), roughly comparable features, size, and price. Just to be clear, I do think the G35 beats the TL-S in just about every way (other than mileage, which is the topic at hand). But I'd describe it as better, not different, so I'm curious what you meant.

Sorry, I guess this is OT. PM me if you're willing.

I don't trust factory's numbers anymore. My 03 G35 is doing 17.8mpg, or at least the navi told me so.

Fuel Economy

I have an 05 Coupe and my gas mileage did not improve until I got about 8000 miles on my engine. Everyone told me that the VQ engine is an excellent engine and it takes a while for it to break in. Before 8,000 miles, I was averaging around 15-17 city/ highway; now I am averaging 19-22 miles. Give it time, it will break-in; I have felt your pain.

On the first tank it was almost entirely city driving, lots of stop-and-go and idle. I know I am in Canada but I just love to convert to mpg. I think I did about 12mpg.

Then on the second tank was a mix of city and highway driving. A bit better this time at 14mpg.

Just filled up about half a tank last night (it was 84.9 cents/litre for premium). This half tank was done almost entirely on highway. I got about 15.5mpg.

These figures are a long way from the 19mpg city, 26mpg highway quoted by Infiniti. Even the real-life test by Motorweek got 22mpg mixed.

Can this poor economy so far be blamed on the newness of the car? It has not been properly broken-in yet. I would not say I have a really heavy right foot.

Can anyone who has a 2007 G35 share his/her information here? How about you guys who own a first-generation G35? Did you remember anything similar when you got your new car?

Thanks everyone!
My 04 6MT coupe used to average 14-16mpg in the first months of ownership. The MPG then started to gradually increase, and I now average 20-21mpg.

Like others have said: give it some time. Although I must mention that other than on very long highway trips with a lean foot, there is no way you will get 26mpg either.
