Sport Auto Or Sport 6mt, Which Should I Get?

I am in the process of maybe trading in my 03 coupe auto modified for a 07 sedan, but I was wondering if anyone out there drove both sport models and if there is that much performance difference between both? Plus does the auto shift a lot faster than the 03?

If you want a fun to drive car... get the 6MT.

If you want a calm (but yet still a bit fun to drive since its a G ) car... then get the Auto.

Personally, I find auto's boring. Got tired of it and thats why I bought a 6MT G35 rather than an auto.

If you know how to ride it, the 6MT should be faster than auto.

It all depends on how your view is on driving...

Goodluck either way on the new 07 G!

+1 - This and the brakes are the only disappointment w/the '07G IMO. When they said this car was "almost new" they were not kidding - for the auto is a carry-over and it's disappointing; especially compared the 335i's awesome 6-speed manumatic [and even the VW's DSG for that matter]. I’d get the 6-speed manual if you really want to be part of-the-action anyhow.

I smell an '07.5 mid-cycle refresh

VW's DSG is not an auto tranny
Its a manual tranny sans clutch with automated shifting - quite a difference

One other consideration could be availability.
More than 80% of the Gs at dealers are going to be autos - its going to be unlikely that a 6sp with the color and options you want is sitting in a dealer's lot.

6sp would most likely mean custom order and wait ....

To me the wait just makes things sweeter - your mileage may vary !

Yes technically you are correct – however who ever said the design of a gearbox determines its designation [semi-auto, not a “real” auto, ect…] – rather the interface to the driver should. I would really say this is a paradigm shift in the design of automatics, and a fantastic one at that.

Lets agree to disagree on some things

I agree with you that it is indeed a good development in the world of auto trannies (spare us the SMG though !!!) - the future looks good !

There is nothing like a manual transmission. However, that said, it depends where you live too. If you deal with traffic everyday, maybe you want to consider an auto. If you don't encounter much traffic or don't care, you should be more than happy with the 6MT.
