I have ordered an 07 G and it should arrive in January. My question is about the stereo hard drive . I know that you can download music to the hard drive from the cd's. Can you download music from a compact flash card as well?

 

No, dash mounted CD player only.....and it can't be MP3 CDs either. The CF card is for playing only.

... now I understand why people are asking about the biggest CF cards out there....

 

* CF Card is for playing MP3s and WMAs only.....no ripping to the HD.
* The in-dash CD player is for ripping original music CDs to the HD. You can also play an MP3 CD from the in-dash CD player.
* The CD changer in the trunk is for playing only and it does not play MP3 discs.

I think that about covers it.

 

The reason that Infiniti did this was to avoid problems with the copyrights and licensing. A friend of mine works for a company that builds extremely high end SACD players, but they don't include DVD playback because they don't want the added cost of licensing.

 

OK for the encoding from the in dash player to the hard drive. Do you have to listen the CD while encoding?

How long does it take to encode a typical CD of 15-20 tracks?

 

I think I recall members saying that by the time they are on the third or fourth song, the entire CD has been ripped to the HD.

 

I finally found the screen that allow one to set it so CDs ill be recorded when they are played- but have had some burn and others not so am not sure how it all works!

With sat radio and decent FM in the DC area this is not turning out to be the big deal I had expected it to. But I will keep on burning til my CD collection is in there.

It is really redundant at present with the availablity of every cheaper large flash drives (Moore's Law in your palm, so to speak) easy ripping on my desktop, etc.

 

This isn't just an simple mp3 player, this is a $35,000 car. The licensing fees have already been paid! In fact I would imagine they pay more in licensing fees with this choice since their stereo also does encoding, not just decoding, unless they use a proprietary or free compression type.

My mp3s are legitimate, many of which did not come from a CD. They all are also at least 192kbps cbr with most being 210kbps+ vbr. What format and bitrate did infiniti choose?

There are hundreds if not thousands of mp3 player models available on the market, all of which allow you to copy your mp3s to the devices. If Infiniti deliberately left this feature out of their stereo all I can say is it idiotic.

Look on the bright side, it still has WAY MORE options for playing music than our generation G has. I like looking at it in a positive way instead.

 

Here, here! Very stupid decision on their part. Plus, the number of tracks is limited on the CF card, so you can't even really take advantage of using a big CF card. Stupid, stupid, stupid.
