2nd gear clunk?

Hello to all 6 speed owners, I have a question.

I've looked around this site and only found one mention of the "oh so popular 2nd gear clunk" in this thread (https://g35driver.com/forums/showthr...smission+clunk) on post 4.

My question, who here has or knows about this issue? Again, its not really a bother for me really, so much as a possible defect in my car.

Any explanation would be greatly appreciated,
Chris

FYI, that thread referenced a 2006 model. Are the 2007 6MTs the same?

Anyway, I haven't noticed a "clunk" in 2nd. Can you describe it more? Other than the vibration and the abrupt engine braking when off throttle, I think the 2007 6MT feels solid without any drivetrain slop.

From what I understand, they are the same transmission, possibly with minor differences, but still the same trannsmission.

2nd gear is difficult to get into without it making an audible clunk that you can also feel. Especially when it the car is cold/its cold outside.

Anyone else experiencing this?

Chris

I haven't noticed any difficulty shifting into 2nd. Certainly no audible noise. The coldest I've driven in so far is about 35F

i have the 06 coupe 6mt

i was told by 3 different dealerships that the 2nd gear clunk is normal. i get the clunk at random times when i drive. i think if you press the clutch all the way down and slide it into 2nd slowly the chances of hearing it will be less. sometimes i put it into 2nd and there is no noise at all. so basically u have to shift slowly (boring)

it is very sad that theres a clunk
1 of the things that make me consider going back to honda

What is a second gear clunk and how can it be considered normal?
It sounds like you are describing a syncro issue. The fact that shifting it slow and easy makes it shift OK.
I didn't have any issues with the 6mt test drives.

This can't be normal - the dealer service said it was??

Hmm. I find this really hard to believe...

My car does it, but it doesn't bother me. Generally happens when the car is cold.

im sorry i didnt get into detail
keep in mind this is from my own experience
when i shift fast:
clutch 3/4 in > throw to 2nd > *clunk* > clutch out

when i shift slow:
clutch all the way in > pause about a 1/4 of a second (i don't mean exactly 1/4 of a second just a little longer than normal) > throw to 2nd > clutch out

i figure that since the g spot on the clutch feels like a flick of a switch, my shift fast approach didnt allow the clutch to fully disengage and so caused the clunk noise in 2nd.

but i mean i did a test drive with a techy and he said that he was also dissappointed to find that the tranny makes the noise and told me that it was normal. synchros are used to eliminate the need for double-clutching. a synchro's purpose is to allow the collar and the gear to make frictional contact before the dog teeth make contact. this lets the collar and the gear synchronize their speeds before the teeth need to engage. so if it were a syncrho problem, there would be grinding. the noise is a clunk which sounds completely different from grinding.

also:
from 1st > 2nd > 3rd, i find it goes in much more smooth if i press the clutch in all the way
from 3rd > 4th > 5th > 6th, pressing the clutch in half way will make it go in smooth

if anything you're still under a warrenty

I took it in to the dealer and to no surprise, they said it was "normal". It got me thinking, just because something is normal doesn't mean that there isn't something wrong. In this case it means there is an inherant problem in most of the 6mt.

The previous description applies, mostly when its cold, but yes, it is a sychroniser issue. Even when properly warmed, clunks are duplicateable.

Most people that I've asked just didn't know they had the issue until I asked them about it. After they had the opportunity to drive their own car thinking about it, they too have the same issue.

PITA, but I've got it logged with Infiniti so if it becomes a serious problem, I can point to the initial stages.
