Tint question

I have a black obsidian '07 Sport and am thinking a tint job would be nice. Unfortunately, I'm in IL where there is no tint allowed on the front doors. In the past, I've had cars in NJ with 5% all around and they were cop magnets. So I'm trying to decide whether to (a) go light (~25-35%) on all windows except the front windshield, and run the risk of a ticket, or (b) go with 15-25% on rear doors and back window only.

Thanks in advance...

IMO, light on all except windshield. Reason ... at least you get UV protection in front!.

Go light... You'll like it. Hopefully no tickets.

A. Don't be stupid and tint the front windshield. Unless you're referring to the two front doors. In that case,

B. I have Black Obsidian and went 35% on all four doors, 20% on rear window. It's not too dark on the doors, but yet still looks good. I'll post pics soon.

I went 5% backs, and 35% front doors. It's illegal here too. The fronts look darker because the backs are so dark. I would suggest lighter all around if you want to fly under the radar! I'll wait for a warning and then maybe go none front or lighter all around.

If you tint the front side windows lighter than the rear side windows, the cops will probably be more likely to think that the fronts were left stock and not ticket you. You could go dark in the back 15-20% and 50% or lighter in the front. If you use something like ceramic huper optik, you could even be 70% in the front sides and still get great UV and heat rejection.

I'm going with 20% all around (nothing on windshield) on my black/black G35S. It's slightly illegal in Florida, but I don't like see thru windows. I also don't like blacked out cars though. 20% is not too bad when it comes to seeing out at night.

25% is considered light?

At 25% you can't see the occupants....

I was thinking of going 35% on mine 2007 black sedan.

But now that may be too dark.. maybe just 20 or 25%...?

20% is darker than 35%. The lower the percentage, the more light is blocked out. The percentage represents amount of light transmitted. 35% seems to be a nice middle ground.

im thinking 35% all around too. i hate the look of light/no tint on the front doors, with dark on the rear. its illegal here too but i got away with it in my last car.

I know nothing about tint, have never tinted a vehicle. What do you guys think would look good on a Lakeshore Slate? I also do not know the legal limits in VA. I think my buddy just did 35% all around though, so, I am guessing that is legal. Thanks!

Does anyone know what comes stock on the FX?
My FX rear and side rears was so dark I could barely see out of them at night.
Thank god for the backup camera!

It might not be good to assume. I ran slightly past legal limit tint on my previous car, but they are very relaxed in my state.

This should help you out: Tint Laws

Once you get to that site just click on the link to U.S. Tint Laws, or look below:

VA Tint Laws:
Windshield: AS1 (represents how far down you can go with a tint strip)
Front Side: 50%
Back Side: 35%
Rear Window: 35%

In other words your friend is running illegal tint on his front windows.

Me personally I find 35% to be too light, let alone 50%. I guess this is a judgment call on your part based on how cops are in your area. In Florida you can't even count how many cars run limo tint and never have issues.

I'm going with 20% black matte tint which to me is a good middle ground. It's pretty easy to see out of at night and isn't pitch black or completely see-thru.

I wouldn't be so sure of that...with a graphite interior and 20% tints, it's going to be pretty dark from the outside looking in. Just my opinion. My rear window is 20% and it looks almost limo tint with the dark interior.
