I hope I won't encounter that situation again. I just happened to be in civil court that day and placed all my "metal" in my work bag as I was going through the metal detector.

When I got back to my car, the keys were still in the bag and just opened the trunk and tossed the bag in without realizing they were still in my bag.

You're right, I could put it in the wrong spot in the trunk and may accidently lock myself out. Here's hoping that won't happen ...

Here is a question: Since the internal locking system relies on the fob, what happens if the fob's battery is dead? How do you unlock the car?

 

fob has a key in it, and once you open the car, you put the fob in a slot on the bottom left of the dash to start the car.

then go change the battery in the fob.

 

My cousin was over the other day and said that he saw something on tv (news) that people have been able bypass the key fob using laptops. It wasn't specific to Infiniti but all keyless entry cars. Has anyone else heard of this?

 

oh, so we still have the key lock in the door handle?

 

On the old benz's that had the infrared remotes, you could program a universal remote and use that :-D

Other questions:

1) The car does not auto-lock when you shut off the engine and leave the car with fob in hand (too bad), but does it auto-lock once you are in the car and first put it in gear to drive away ?

2) If you approach your parked car, with fob in hand, the car will unlock...but what if you dont want it to?..ie.. creeps nearby. I assume you cant really cntreol the unlocking and would need to manually lock it via the fob...or walk the other way!!

3) If my fob is in my jacket, and I toss it in the back seat, drive off, arrive, park, turn off the engine, leave, and manually lock the car out of habit, it wont let me, correct? If I grab my jacket, and I'm right outside the car, is the proximity scan that exact to know it's now okay to let me lock the car via the door...or can I only lock if via the fob?

Answers:

1) No, it doesn't auto-lock when you drive away (which is good, I hate that).

2) The doors won't unlock just because you approach the car. You have to push the button on the outside door handle (or trunk) to unlock it. The range is very short, like about 2 ft. If i stand at the driver's door with the fob in my pocket, only the driver's door will unlock (unless I push the button twice). "Creeps" can't unlock the passenger side just because you approach the driver's side. Locking/unlocking with the fob buttons has the same range as any other remote access system.

3) Correct. If you leave the fob in the car, it won't lock and it will beep to warn you that it didn't. As long as you take the fob outside with you, you can lock it any way you like.

 

As a couple of us pointed out in posts # 28 & 29 the first time you said this, it's not correct. The fob only needs to be there to start the engine, not to run it.

I have to admit though, your rebuttal was so articulate and well presented that I was almost convinced.

 

Have you tried it? My dealer said the car would keep going without the fob BUT you can't restart the car (if you switch it off) until you get the Fob.

 

My coworker's TL was stolen at work in broad daylight. He came back from lunch, and BAM! it was gone. He found it a few days later on the morning news. CHP chased a joy rider going 100mph+ up Hwy 101, until he crashed in San Francisco and totaled it. I'm hoping our remote entry transmission is highly encrypted. Honestly, if someone wants to steal your car, they'll steal your car.

Have any of you checked out the Camry Hybrid? It also has an intelligent key system. But, instead of pressing a button on the door handle, all you have to do is play your fingers between the door and the handle. It'll sense you (and your key fob), and the door will unlock! Ultimate laziness!

 

Haven't tried driving the car w/o the key inside the cabin. But of course the a-holes who car-jacked you won't be able to restart the car from their chopshop, since they'll be a hundred miles away from you (& the key).
