A/V Control Unit mods ...

I was thinking about what it would take to increase the HDD size as well as switching the CD player to a CD/DVD player.

I finally had a moment to browse through the service manual to check out the electronics in the 07. Looks like the A/V control unit is integrated meaning the C/D, Navigation (GPS), back-up camera function, and hard disk drive (HDD) are all stuck into one box. The service manual does not go into how to get into the A/V control unit so it is not normally a serviceable part.

I also learned that if you remove the spoiler with a back up cam, you have to re-calibrate the A/V control unit to make sure the guidelines are where they are supposed to be (I always thought mine were slightly off).

So … to make a long story short … there are a LOT of possibilities for anyone that knows how to mod an A/V control unit. All you hackers … go to it !

I would hope that at some point someone does take the plunge and crack it open. Actually my first hope is that Infiniti releases some software updates to make the audio software function like it should or at least fix things they say the system will do (nested folders on the CF reader) that it doesnt. This to me could potentially be the beauty of a HD/Software based audio system. If Infiniti cares enough to update it every so often, it could be a real gold mine.

Not to mention that a software update is probably going to provide the means to crack the whole unit. the minute they have an update someone can just view the update code and modify, then have a simple means to modify a new update and apply it via the standard official method.

As it stands now, someone probably has to pull the HDD and hook it up to a laptop and hope it's not encrypted, then figure out all the configurations... could be dificult with out a manual. I'm pretty sure that all the fixes/hacks/workarounds are going to have to be done in software and cutting/splicing wires isn't going to work on anything.

I'd imagine they used a laptop size hard drive for the SOW (Ultra DMA/33).

Actually Daniel it is an Ultra ATA 100 hard drive. The SOW uses a 30 GB Seagate EE25 (Extreme Environment) Series hard drive.

The Navi/Voice Recognition takes up the rest of the space.

Interesting, the EE25 series drives allow use in temperatures ranging from -30C to 85C (-20C to 75C for aftermarket drives). Unfortunately for the climate in Calgary I would need to stick with the extreme environment drives which are only available up to 40GB. That makes doing any work to upgrade the hard drive a waste of time.
