Nav / XM --> Sirius

I found a local shop that has done some pretty cool installs and works with all the local BMW dealerships for their after market audio needs. Anyway, I take my car in Thursday to have Sirius installed.

They're dropping an Audiovox SIRCMB5 into the center console bin and will be connecting it via the aux inputs. They're going to mount the receiver to the passenger side of the bin so it faces me if I open up the arm rest and peek in there. They're making the cable long enough that I can just unplug it from the reciever and then connect my MP3 player, so that will be nice. I wanted a tiny receiver so I didn't have too many options -- and this one comes with a remote so I won't have to be constantly popping open the arm rest. The antenna will just be run underneath / around the dash and will be mounted on the dash up by the windshield.

It's going to cost me about $180 -- including install.

Here's a picture of the receiver (not crazy about the orange lights, but it won't really be seen)....

Here's one of the remote:

I'll post pictures when everything is installed.

Yeah, stuck to the side. I thought about just not having it mounted and just throwing it in there.....

What do you guys think? Mount it or no?

What is the shop charging you for? There doesn't seem to be any work involved?

Anyone have any idea why this was moved? I have a 2007 G w/ Nav and a lot of people have had questions about getting Sirius installed.

I'm not ticked or anything - just trying to figure out where I should be posting stuff.

Not sure why it was moved, but I moved it back to the 07 Sedan section.

I'm fairly sure that as long as you don't mind losing XM traffic, you could install the factory sirius module on the nav equipped cars and have it function perfectly. It may require changing out the antenna, again for the factory item, but as far as I can tell, the AV unit that controls all the integration wouldn't know the difference. It would just be like not subscribing to XM traffic. The wiring loom at the back of the car (in the trunk) and to the AV unit seems to be generic whichever Sat provider you choose. Someone with a great dealer relationship should be able to confirm or deny this. The GPS antenna is under the dash so the only thing in the roof mounted pod is the Sat radio antenna.

that is a great idea. i kind of like having navtraffic though, even though there is a big delay in getting updated data. hopefully when the merger goes though i can have everything with my XM without added anything new.

This is the link to the thread that had the link to the ashtray StarBase install:
https://g35driver.com/forums/g35-sedan-v36-2007-08/142247-sirius-install-g35x-w-nav.html
Second post down, from Haiglee.

Also, regarding the Sirius factory install. Kenny (a dealer who posts a lot here) indicated that their dealership had indeed done a Sirius factory unit install on a 2007 Nav and it worked (obviously losing the XM Live Traffic). The only drawback was the need for the second antenna, Sirius and XM antennas are different.

Not sure if there's a way to remove the shark fin and replace the XM antenna with the Sirius, obviously that would be ideal.

Also, make sure you get the right Sirius unit. Several of the Nissan / Infiniti aftermarket sites have Sirius factory units, but they're for the older (pre 2007) G's, I'm not sure if they would work in the 2007.

I will probably be trying the Sirius factory install soon, I think I've had my new car long enough now that I'd be OK tearing the interior apart...

Kenny, if you see this thread and if you have the part number for the 2007 Sirius factory unit, could you post it? Thanks.

So should I have it mounted to the side or just let it lay in the bottom of the arm rest?
