Hmmmm... well the latest I heard is that they're moving away from the mysterious Black Obsidian nomenclature (which nobody can remember how to spell or pronounce) to a more simple and less pretentious description such as:
Black volcanic rock with naturally occurring glass characterisitcs due to rapid cooling and freezing of felsic lava.
(which of course is why the notion of obsidian on graphite makes complete sense as colour combo!
