handling after lowering

I have been able to drive my G35 Journey on Bay Area roads both street and highways and this is what I think of the lowering thus far:

a. let me first say that I dont consider myself a really good track driver capable of detecting minor handling changes - but that said, I did feel that the car cornered much better, with less effort. without the lowering, I had to brace a little more when cornering hard, but now I feel less roll and the car turns more easily and fights the turn less. not that the stock version was bad - just that I was surprised that I would notice these changes.

b. ofcourse the penalty of lowering is that I have to go slower over speed bumps and many times entering/existing from driveways onto the main road I feel that I must go slower to avoid the rubber strip at the bottom on the bumper from scraping... this has happened very rarely so far and I know how to avoid them altogether - instead of approaching the intersection head on, I approach at an angle... this works great for right turns, but on left turns I cannot come at an angle, I have to go straight first and then turn.

c. the ride otherwise on straight roads, freeway driving is exactly the same - it does feel a tab bit softer on the freeway which is more comfortable.

d. when I roll down the windows and go over speed bumps I can hear a faint sweak of the springs. this seems to have stopped...now...

My specs from alignment (i need to scan) are very similar to the ones that Hokie & others have shown with a slight negative camber in the rear.

thats about it folks, more on the uneven tire wear once I get a chance to study that.

cheers,
mobile

Question about (a). What do you mean you had to "brace a little more when cornering hard" ? I guess you are saying you are taking the turn at a higher lateral G force?

hard to tell...

actually its kinda hard to explain... so its probably confusing

lets just say that it loves to be thrown into corners much more now... and the driver is also more comfortable doing so... is this what is called better handling? sounds like it!

maybe you answered this in a different post, but which springs did you go with? got a pic of how low it sits?

I am with you, my review would go much the same. I am still waiting the chance to go out and drive the car harder, the weather here has not been cooperating. I also want to pile buddies (dead weight) in the back and see if I am going to have any rubbing issues. The car seems to be just as smooth.

I have picked up a VERY slight vibration in the steering wheel at about 65 or 70+. It could be something in the alignment, wheel balancing, tire pressure (which I will check). Not exactly sure. I am also working hard to be able to determine WHERE I will potentially scrape the black piece under the front as to hit it at an angle etc etc.

So far, I am enjoying it though!

Does the camber get back into spec after the lowering or will a camber kit be needed?

mobileg35 said he'd be posting his alignment specs, but I'll jump the gun and say I'm pretty sure his will be out front and rear just like everyone else that has lowered an 07 so far.

Alignment kit is only needed if you want to get back into factory alignment specs. If you go without it, you get better handling due to slight additional negative camber, but the trade off is uneven tire wear. As of this post, no alignment kit exists yet for the 07.

The fronts need a little bit more camber taken out after lowering, anything higher than -1.5 is not good for a street daily driver IMO, to much tire wear. Although I love the way it feels pushing it hard through sweepers. I hope that someone develops adjustable front arms to compensate, the rear is fine I think.

It DOES handle well with the extra negative camber! I am waiting on the alignment kit though, I do not want to be replacing tires more often than necesssary....

my alignment specs - how bad is it?

I didnt have a color scanner at work... so I added red ovals to those readings that are in red (i.e. out of spec).

I'm keeping a look out for uneven tire wear, but would love to know if I can go without a camber kit (invest the money in better wheels )

thx folks.

mobileG35 - Have you noticed if your suspenion bottoms out more often after you have lowered your car? For example, if you go over a moderate sized bump in the road, does it feel harsher than before?

Also, how is the damping of the stock shock when paired with your H&R springs. Does the ride still feel well damped? In otherwords, if you are on the freeway and you go over an undulating part of the freeway or a dip, does the car oscillate up and down a few times or does it take one bounce and stabilize right away?

Just keep in mind ... better wheels => more expensive tires to burn up.

they bottomed out once when I fit a bump on the freeway at high speed. but on regular driving, i have not bottomed out a lot - the drop isnt that much...

damping is very good, there is no bouncing, i pretty much feel the drive is like stock - quite happy that this is the case.
