As far as I know, there's no way to just scroll without selecting the songs as you browse. Its annoying. I would love to know if there is a way to just scroll and browse. Is your friend's car a 2007 G sedan?
Using folders helps with the organization though. You can go into specific folders and also go back one level out of the folder by using the "Back" button. Granted you can't browse folders either (like if you want to scroll down to see what other folders you have that don't fit on the screen). By scrolling down or up, it'll select the first song in that folder.
I use Nero to burn CDs, which lets you make folders and organize files prior to burning. So I make a folder and drag/drop the desired songs from iTunes into the folder, and repeat for other folders, then burn the disc. Never tried with just iTunes though... sorry
But can't you have nested playlists/folders within playlists on iTunes? I wonder if the same folder hierarchy would be retained when burning an mp3 CD.

Try pressing the enter button. I discovered the other night that if you have an MP3 disk with 7 different cd's worth of albums on it, the screen at first shows the 7 albums as folders. But if you hit the enter button it will switch to listing the tracks in the folder without having to scroll up or down to switch views.
I hope this is what you were talking about.
Cheers.
