Paddle shifting question

Here is the rundown: I was driving home from work today and decided to try the paddles. I was going at about 40mph on a back road (in plain Drive - not DS) when I toggled the left shifter. The car then went down from 5th to 4th (displayed the actual gear on the information display).... I proceeded to accelerate to about 55mph and just when I was about to up-shift back to 5th, the car in front of me slowed down to make a turn, as I slowed down with it (to approximately 30mph), the car automatically shifted it back to 5th and reengaged full automatic mode (the information displayed went back to "D")...

I thought that once you toggle the shifters you take the car out of D and enter full manual mode. Why did the car up-shift independently and went back to "D" - Is this normal? If it is, how would I stay in full manual mode? - Do I need to engage DS mode first?

TIA

Only in DS mode will the manual selection remain.. at least until you come to a rolling stop.

+1 Although in DS mode once you switch to manual, it'll stay that way until you shift out of DS (stopping has no effect, other than shifting down to 1st).
