New Motor Trend - 07 5AT 13.9@100mph

The April 07 Motor Trend has a new long term test G35S 5AT and it did 13.9@100mph with a 5.3 0-60. That puts the 5AT .1 seconds and 2mph behind the 6MT they tested during the COTY test. 0-60 for the 6MT was 5.3.

One statement stood out most to me: "Is the automatic now the more desirable transmission?".

With technology advancing so much in the tranny department .. maybe the automatic is the most desireable option now

i mean look at all the new ferrari's and lambo's..they got that high tech paddle shifting technology with no clutch

What's the relation between a fast 1/4 time and reliability? I didn't know there were reliability problems or any other issues for that matter with the 6MT...

I would say yes, With the shift in power band upward with more high end HP, plus the fact of the car weight.

I am betting that the 6 MT is getting real hard to get of the line with such a broad power band.
again, a set of drag slicks would be a true test of what the difference would be on a drag strip.

Absolutely not. With drag tires in the equation, the 6MT could be potentially far quicker.

I think the reason MT said the 5AT may be the more desirable tranny is because of the lack of vibrations. In the COTY issue, MT called the 6MT in the G35, "a gruff old lump" because of all the vibration.

There are none, but it is easier to maintain an automatic than a manual. No clutch adjustments, or replacing when you abuse them, etc.

I do prefer the manual to the auto though

not true. they use clutches that are servo controlled- no pedal for the driver. the infiniti still uses a slushbox- no clutch but torque converters instead

Even if the auto were faster, I'd still get a manual.

But it's not... never will be... same old-school design auto with a torque converter. Only a DSG or SMG type auto tranny would be faster. The losses with a typical torque converter are higher than a manual.

Chances are... also.... being a long-termer... that engine is a little looser now that it's got some miles on it.

Uh oh, think I see the path we're headed down (again). Maybe I can save everyone some time by covering all of the bases:

MT:
  • It's technically faster, and since I'm a superlative driver, that means I'm faster
  • Purists drive MT, everything else is worthless and a waste of time
  • Handling a stick is proof of driving skill
  • REAL cars have a stick

AT:
  • It's technically slower, but most MT drivers don't REALLY know how to drive stick so AT is faster
  • G35 MT is lame because of vibration
  • AT technology is now far more advanced than MT
  • Traffic makes MT worthless

MT and AT are both cool, and congrats to the folks that chose what THEY liked. Peace.

P.S. Dave, thanks for the info.

That's what I was trying to say. If anything else is true. A stick 6mt should be way quicker now if you can drive the car off the line with its new power band. The G,S just were never set-up for drag racing.

Even up here in Utah with its thin air and lack of power in my G 6mt I had a hard time getting off the line without over driving the engine. 13:40 @ 107 mph proves that.

I must add that AT,s are much easer to drive than an MT at the strip.
A good stick shift driver can even drive a AT better than an only AT driver. HA,HA,HA,

Come on guys, please don't start this stupid debate again. The AT and MT are so close in times, that they are bascially the same. Neither one is better than the other!!

It all boils down to the driver... In real world driving, a tenth of a second isn't noticeable
