Excellent question given one can turn the car off in Drive. I would hope it checks for speed!. Easy enough to test just by slowly driving on a quuiet street and hitting the button. I'll try it tonight unless someone beats me to it.

Yup, happened to me a few times now (mainly because I'm still used to the 6MT where I would simply turn the engine off and get out of the car). Although I must ask: How in hell did you miss the warning on the instrument panel that says "Car is not in Park!"

This is quite a common reaction.

Car very very smart - makes driver very very dumb.

For the last two weeks, my hand hovers over the dashboard as my brain tries to compute what to do first - oh ya, push the button - tough one. Car wont start of course as the brake is not pressed. But my brain needs a key in hand before the foot hits the brake!

Then I pulll out..foregetting to buckle up.

Same thing when I'm done. Put in park ( I do remember that one) then I grab at air looking for the keys. Oh ya NO keys. Push the button. Leave the car, forget to lock it.... IDIOT!!

I was going to look for a "G" t-shirt....but perhaps I should just settle for one that says "G your stupid".

be careful. not sure how the steering will react (will it lock, etc). you'll lose the brake booster if it does cut out but that doesnt matter for the first two pumps. but yeah, i dont recommend trying this, even on a slow road.

Didn't see any warning at all Daniel as the car was completely shut off.

Test results !

OK, here's the tests I just did:

TEST 1 - Engine on, car in Drive, foot on brake, hit button off : Egnine turns off with fast loud audible beeps and visual indicator in dash (P with a shift arrow up).

TEST 2 - Engine on, car in Drive, foot off brake, car rollling forward slightly , hit button off : Same as (1)

TEST 3 -Engine on, car in Reverse, foot on brake , hit button off : Same as (1)

TEST 4 - Engine on, car in Reverse, foot off brake, car rollling backward very slightly , hit button off : Same as (1)

TEST 5 - Engine on, car in Drive, foot off brake, but now coasting, but still moving fast ( a few mph), hit button off : CAR WILL NOT TURN OFF ( yay).

TEST 6 - Engine on, car in Drive, foot off brake, coasting, but now almost at a standstill, hit button off : Same as (1)

So, its clealy speed-aware....cant turn engine off while in gear and moving above a few mph ; otherwise can turn it off in gear, but with audible and visual warnings.

Mr Canuck.....perhaps you have turned some alerts/warnings off??

^ Good tests. There weren't any warnings at all other than the one once my door was closed. I'll have to check in the manual to see if there is any warnings that can be turned on/off like you mentioned. My garage floor is level so that would explain it not moving.

That's why you should get an 06 G35 . It won't let you remove the key if still in Drive.
