I will admit that I have for years done this when my mind was all over. After having driven a manual for YEARS and that being my first car, my "instincts" are to not have a car to put in park. It's not that bad. Besides, it's a great laugh for everyone else.

That's weird, it should have displayed an error on the info screen (between the tachometer and speedometer), even with everything shut off

Funny. After I've gotten used to my keyless ignition, when I drive my wife's XC90, I occasionally feel the urge to press a button to shut off her car. When returning to the car, I forget that I have to pull the keys out of my pocket.

BTW - I used to back my car into my garage. A friend of mine, who is a doctor, was very very insistent that this is a bad thing to do due to carbon monoxide. Even though the garage door is open, the tailpipe of the car is pushing the carbon monoxide away from the garage door opening. I thought, well, the garage door is open. However, she was extremely insistent that this is not a good thing to do. So, erring on the side of caution, I decided to heed her advice and I no longer back my car into the garage. It also makes me feel less guilty if I warm up the car for a few seconds longer inside the garage, while I wait for the RPMs to go back down after a cold start (as recommended in the Infiniti manual).

But I can do one better.
I constantly reach out and hit the button, and shut the car off.
I then take my hand away, open the door to get out, and then reach back to take the keys out of the ignition.

Car has me feeling like an idiot.
I do this too!

I wanna know about shutting it down on the highway too- that could be bad!

This is not something I would like to experiment with , just like I never wanted to try to take the keys out of the ignition while driving my other cars. I supposse people are more worried about this, since it's theoretically easier to push a button than to pull a key out or switch it to a different position in the ignition?

Most cars won't let you pull the "key" out unless it is in "park"

however most key based cars will let you kill the engine at speed (turn the darn key !!!)

How about this for stupid: shifting to neutral whilst accelerating, thinking the car was in DS and expecting an upshift...

Can we sticky this thread to prove that it isn't just men who do silly things in car?
