I am very impressed, the headlights look great. When I saw the title, I thought blech... But damn they look good.

Anyone know of a place that does this in Michigan? I don't think shipping is an option since I would have to somehow unplug, pack and ship, and wait for headlights.

Does anyone know how to remove the headlight seal? I opened up my headlights and decided I'm going to replace the seal with the nissan oem stuff (which is black). I scraped off 90% of it (hours of work) but the rest is almost impossible. Is there a solvent that will work thats also safe on the plastic housing?

yea that's what I'm talking about. I want to remove the original stuff. I don't think I can use the nissan oem butyl rubber without cleaning off the leftovers.

Ok, first... "butyl" is not an OEM sealer. Nissan doesn't assemble the headlights, a company named Ichiko assembles the headlights, and they use a different type of seal. After about a year of using butyl to seal up headlights, I found out that it only messes up the seal, you won't get the same results because butyl doesn't harden up like the oem seal does...

Butyl is not the answer to sealing up headlights, trust me... I do this for a living.

If for some reason you need to open the headlights up after u sealed it up with butyl, its gets EXTREMELY messy, and pretty much destroys the seal.

I had boxes of butyl that I ended up giving away to a bodyshop because they have better use for it.

The stock seal is good enough, especially on sedans, every since I opened up these first headlights, I only had 1 issue with condensation on sedan headlights using the stock seal....


BTW... easiest way to remove the oem seal is to use WD40, it will literally disinegrate the seal, but that's not what you want... but since you already took the seal off... you might aswell use butyl, although I'm not sure how well it's going to seal now.

 

So what do they use as the seal?

I attempted to contact several headlight manufacturers (Hella, Ichiko, etc.) and they won't disclose what they use for the seal. I'm about to get a chemist up in here and have him figure it out lol.

Butyl is not the same stuff, it always stays soft and never hardens, for a perfect seal.. you need the seal to harden, otherwise... butyl seems to release chemical agents inside the headlight that makes them look foggy on the lens.

How would NISSAN make a seal and call it OEM when they don't even manufacture their headlights? It might be OEM, but it's definitely not intended for headlights... otherwise dealerships would simply repair headlights instead of throwing them out everytime there's a condensates headlight (stock headlights get condensation too sometimes).

 

The seal NISMO shop sells are different from the seal that they use for 07+ sedans or 08+ coupes.

The seal they sell are for the first gen coupes and sedans. How do I know? I've seen them all. hahaha

Yeah, it'd be really nice if someone finds out where we can find the seals for the second gens. I've been dying to find out what they are as well.

 

Aside from the color, the seal is the same on all infiniti headlights.

 

Well I got the nissan butyl rubber stuff. I'm gonna see how it works out and keep you posted. These are spare headlights anyways and I can mess around with them.

 

Is the Nissan Butyl hard or soft? Because the headlight seal is hard as a rock when it's dry, and when you heat it up it's extremely soft as you know.

Let me know how it works. I tried removing most of the oem seal off G37 coupe headlights and using just the butyl, it never sealed perfectly.

 

I wouldn't say the oem seal is rock hard when it's dry. It has the same consistency of really tough liquorish and still kinda gummy. I can still pick off the left over seal (which has been dry for a week now) with my finger.

Reading other forums the "nissan butyl rubber" seems quite popular. Just guessing from what I read the nissan stuff is like play-doh. I don't know how or if it dries though.
