How does the front license plate go on?

So I finally got the license plates in the mail for my new 07 G35 Sedan and I run out and look at the back bumper - check! Then I look at the front bumper - huh? There's no place for it to go!

So I call the dealer and he says "No problem - we can mount that for you in a jiffy" and I say "By drilling?" and he says "Uh huh" and I say "Oh."

So right now I'm imagining some meatstick drilling two random holes in my bumper and screwing in the plate. PLEASE tell me there is something there to guide them in their hole-drilling besides "eyeballing it".

Nope. However I would be grateful that the dealer didn't install the bracked before delivery. I waited for a fresh car right off the truck. One of the reasons was so they wouldn't drill holes. I have never had front plates on any of my "sportier" cars.

I was wondering the same thing. If I don't have to have front plates on, I'd rather leave it as clean as it looks right now without one. I'll have to check the legality of it here in California...

I'm running without a front plate, as are some friends with their cars, and so far no-one cares (Texas). If you must have one, check out Stillen's web site. They have a front license plate holder that screws into the tow hook hole, no holes in the bumper required - as of a few months ago they did not have one specifically for the '07, but might now. If not, your plate will supposedly stick out an inch or two.

Hey, thanks! I called Stillen and they asked me to go down and measure. I opened up the trunk of my G35 and pulled out the tow hook and attached it and then used it as a guide with a ruler to measure. Their 24 mm x 5 7/8" looks like just the ticket so I ordered one. Page is here for anyone who is interested.

I will be sure to let you all know how it works when it arrives. Should get it Wednesday or Thursday. I'll also post a new thread with a photo how-to showing assembly (it's like a 1 minute install, I know, but if we can keep people from drilling their G35 bumpers, won't it be worth it?)

Thanks for the advice - I'm new to G35Forums so I bookmarked the Stillen website link.

Yeah, I figure we're not completely safe; but one guy has been doing it for four years, and in that time he's had five (speeding) tickets, only one officer even mentioned it. Sucks that you found the one who cares!

I'm in California and i got a "No front license plate" cheap fix-it ticket a few years ago in the LA Airport. I wanted to say to the bike cop that pulled me over something like "Don't you have anything better to do at one of busiest airports in the country than pulling me over for stupid crap like this? Like, i don't know, catching terrorists, may be?" But i didn't. Anyways, i do not and will not have a front plate on my 07 g.

In Southern Cal the airports use camera's (at ticket boths, etc) to take a picture of front and back license plates of cars. They mail you the ticket. I'm at the airport a lot, it's too expensive not to have the plate in front.

The booth workers don't have the jurisdiction to report you for failure to have a front plate, do they? The have the cameras in at SFO as well (may be only the rear). I thought the cameras are for security purposes only, say, for example, you drive off without paying the toll, or you assault the worker.

I wish my dealer didn't pre-drill the holes for me. I had the first shipment of Gs, and they said it's law (which it is) for dealers to drill the holes. I see SO MANY luxury cars that don't have holes in the front, and these are drivers who probably aren't picky about it either way (older people, soccer moms, etc.).

If anyone's interested, I posted a thread on how I made my own bumper hole plugs using $1 plus from Home Depot/Lowe's and touchup paint.

I am having my first oil change at the dealer tomorrow. I will have the dealer install the front plate for me. I did that with my '05 and it came out as good as it possibly could for having a front plate. I will take a picture and post it after it is done.
