I just got rid of my Grand CHerokee this past week and the G is going to get bike hauling duty. Just wondering what roof rack or hitch/rack setups you have found for the 07'.

A single road or MTB will fit in the trunk with the wheels pulled (unless you ride 61 cm like a buddy). A Saris Bones rack will fit, but is not good for the paint work.

Best bet if you need to haul multiple bikes is a roof rack, but lots of stories of trashing the bike, roof, and overhead obstacle that way...

If you put it in the trunk, you may also want to get a trunk mat:

Thats nice, but it looks like it might tear up the paint on the bumper. I like the setup below, but wished the hitch was a bit more discrete:

I'd love to try the hitch for the 2007, but kind of chicken to be the first one. That would be by far the most convenient and paint friendly way to haul my bikes. Anyone want to try it and post detailed install pics and before/after pics?

I'm not sure if it would work on our Gs, but if you really want to be discreet I would try something like this guy did on his R32 when towing his shifter cart to the track (yeah, he is one lucky sob...) Its a stretch if it would work but its about as discreet as you can get...

OK, well I just ordered this hitch from etrailer so I can use a hitch mounted bike rack, (And to tow home mulch and lumber from Home Depot )

I'll take pics and post results once I get it installed. May need to ask for advice on how best to trim bumper (probably use my dremel), or how to remove any rear bumper clips if required.

Please let us know how it goes. It looked to me that all the trimming would be pretty much under the car as the underbody cover and the bumper cover come together like a clamshell where the hitch will have to come through. Once I started using a hitch mounted bike rack I could never go back to a roofrack.

OK, well I finally got the hitch on Friday and installed it. It took a while to get it, I don't think they had any stock. So, if you want one, you should order it sooner rather than later.

I'll post more detailed install walkthrough with a few tips and tricks I learned, and pictures, (probably start a separate thread). But in summary, install went fine, not too difficult. The bumper needs to be cut, as well as the black under body cover. This can't be seen whatsoever from the rear of the car. You can only tell if you stick your head under the bumper. I have no regrets. I love having it for a hitch mounted bike rack. I highly recommend it for all you cyclists! Will try and have the post up by tomorrow.

Dude you are my hero! I have been eying this setup for weeks, but have been too chickensiht to try it. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE post pics sooner than later, including underneath where you had to make the cuts, and behind where you don't see 'em.

Also, do you foresee any issues with this install on the G35S??? I have the 6MT and I know it's "designed" for the AWD X model. Thanks in advance, let's see those pics bro! (Oh, and if there's some Cervelo or Serotta hanging off the back, by all means post your bikeporn on there too!!!)

Just went with the curt hitch and yakima king pin rack. Bike is high and away from the car. I don't get any rattle from this rack either. Great setup!

No problem, happy to oblige. I've used mine a few times now and am very happy with it, and how the carrier holds the bike. By far the best bike transporter solution I've had on a vehicle.

i was originally going to do the curt, but i just didn't want to hurt the sexy lines of my car. i am now paying altered atmosphere to custom fabricate and weld a hidden stealth hitch install that can't be seen unless the receiver and bike rack are on the car. Similar to this:

I am thinking about the saris cycle-on pro rack as well. Any idea what the rack weighs? How stable are the bikes on it at higher speeds (90 mph). When I road trip with the bikes, I like to spend at little time behind the wheel, so I usually drive a 90+ pace on the freeway, but I don't want have to worry about the bikes falling out of the rack. That would be a horrible thing to see in the rear view mirror
